Our cat is nine months old (male) and has always been a lively cat.

A few days ago he went of his food. This morning he vomited what looked like chicken soup. Obviously, he hasn't had any soup!

We took him to the vet (we live just outside Bangkok). The vet took his temp and it was 105. She then gave him two injections and some supplements to give by oral syringe.

The vet says he just has a flu like virus but he still seems really ill (he's been back from the vets for about 3 hours).

He whimpers a lot, drools on and off and smacks his lips for the last few hours (since he was force fed his supplements to stop dehydration and to give him some vitamins). He seems to have stopped vomiting though. He seems very depressed and just tries to sleep.

The problem I have is the standard of animal care here is not the same as in the west and I'm not sure the vet was correct in just saying he's got a flu type virus after a quick physical and temperature check.

Any ideas?

After finally finding a vet who seems to know what she's doing (this vet has the facilities to x-ray, give iv drips, blood tests, ultra sound etc) it turns out he has one swollen kidney (not cancer or kidney disease but caused by trauma). He's been treated for it for almost a week and looks a lot better, but still doesn't want to eat. The vet reckons he'll eat at home.

Out of interest ,just in case anyone else needs a decent vet here...Klong 2, Rangsit, Nr Bangkok and Thonglar animal hospital, Sukhumvit soi 55, Bangkok come recommended. They are what I would call international standard. Many 'vets' here don't have the facilities and will just guess and give a jab. It's a death sentence to a very sick animal.

Always ask (in developing countries) 'Can you give blood tests, do x-rays, give invtrovenous drips and perform operations'? If the answer is 'no' leave and find someone who does.

It's cost a fortune and he's made me cancel our holiday. Ah well...

I am glad to hear your cat is coming along.

I can't imagine having to look for a really good vet like you have to. Thank goodness you found one!!

I can only believe that you will be blessed, as you have blessed your kitty with your love and dedication.

Thanks for that!

He's just come home and the first thing he did was eat like a horse. So no problems there.

He has to eat special food now. It cost the equivalent of 18 dollars a bag!

The wife is happy and I'm just relieved I found a very good vet.
