Cat Brings Up Meals at Times

Greetings,

We have a 14-year-old American Shorthair “Tabby†that we’ve had since she was a kitten. “Belle†is a house cat and never goes out. But she has long had a problem keeping her food down at times. This was tolerable when we had largely bare wood floors that could be easily cleaned.

Then we moved into a condo with wall-to-wall carpeting. Before long, it became multi-spotted to the point where we have to get the carpet cleaned. But, what is to keep “Belle†from soiling the carpet all over again? BTW, commercial carpet-cleaning pet sprays are unsatisfactory since they leave spotted areas of their own.

We feed “Belle†moist and dry food a few times a day. Some days she’s fine. Other days she doesn’t always keep her meals down. Why is this so? What can we do to alleviate this problem? Is this a vet problem?

Thanks.

Is she throwing up right after she eats? Undigested food? Can you see the kibbles?

This doesn't happen every day but when it does, it's usually after her breakfast. "Belle" prefers moist (canned) cat food to dry pellet-like cat chow. When she runs out of the moist, she goes for the dry. So, when she brings anything up, it's usually semi-liquid. Yet, she can go 2-3 days without this happening. Puzzling?

Since we discard any of her moist food when we retire at night, she has only the dry food - and possibly anything else she might scavenge - be it edible or not. We've seen her nibbling on plastic bags though we try to keep these out of reach. We've seen no evidence of hairballs in what she brings up.

Is there a possible medical reason for her behavior? Would a visit to the vet accomplish anything?

P.S. - before we have our carpets cleaning, we'd like to minimize future such occurrences. We're thinking of putting down a number of area rugs and/or runners over the newly cleaned carpeting. Comments?

Thanks.
