Never had a cat of my own before, not while growing up either but recently took ownership of a 6 week old kitten, frankly I had no other choice because I am an animal lover. I've quickly learned to love it! He's been on dry kitten food since I've had him for a week, because that's what was given to me with him. I work everyday from 7-3, and am home most of the night besides some occasional errands/dinners, etc. What's my best option as far as kitten food and feeding schedule go? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

He was outside of my girlfriends work 2 mornings in a row before she brought him to me. Didn't have a choice as my girlfriend thought her mom was hit by a car because she saw her in the road about 100 feet away on a 2 lane road out in the country. I'm taking him to the vet next week, already have an appt set up.

Congratulations on your new kitty!! Don't forget to show us pics of him!!

I have a 20 week old kitten, who we got when he was about 9-10 weeks. We feed him Wellness kitten canned food 3 times a day (morning, evening, before bedtime). We fed him Royal Canin kitten dry 24/7. You can pretty much let him free feed on the dry for a couple of months, just add the wet food.

In a house.
My experience is kittens, in ideal situations, don't get weaned from mom until they're about 10-12 weeks old. I would reduce the amount of dry food you're giving him and add replacement formula. NEVER use cow's milk. You should get specifically "Kitten replacement formula" (KMR, Hartz). Vets will have this, so will pet stores. Some major grocery stores (EG: Walmart) might have it. If you are unable to locate replacement formula, try feeding kitty some chicken baby food with NO added vegetables, seasonings and especially NO onions.

Good luck with your new arrival.

Well, I did go out and buy some wet food. We'll see how he responds to that tonight when I feed him! I'm actually kind of excited. I was recommended Natural Balance, so that's what I'm going with.

that is solid food... you may want to find a "kitten" food with gravy to entice eating

Squeeeeee!!!!! What lil cutiepie!!!

Definitely would go with a mix of wet and dry - cats are not thirsty animals by nature so the added moisture is a good thing. Let him eat as much as he wants for now since the lil tyke will be growing like a weed in the next few months.

Oh, and welcome to TCS and the joys of being owned by a cat!! LOL!
