Was this normal behaviour while we were away?

Hi all, well as most of you know we just got back from our hols, been away a week. My neighbours looked after the kitties and other animals, well the kitties were a bit naughty (well very actually) They decided to use our lounge and kitchen as a litter tray even though they had their own, our neighbour said there was poo after poo and when we got back underneath out tv was swimming with cat pee, even though our neighbour had cleaned some up that morning. As you can imagine it smelly quite bad and I have caught 3 of the cats trying to do their business in the kitchen since we got back. I have put it down to stress of us going away as we haven't been away in 8 years so our kitties have never been left. Hubby isn't too pleased though and he keeps moaning about the smell. I bought some urine nuetraliser and I have used that several times but I can still smell it, we're moving furniture around and going to give the floor another scrub today, is there anything else that I can use?
The worse behavioural change is Harvey though (he's our newest cat who we had off the lady who lived here before) when we first had him we introduced him slowly to our kitties after we had him fixed and health checked, at first he used to chase them and be quite aggressive, he is only one and a big baby, I think he wants to play with them really but they don't see it like that. Well we just got him calmed down to the point where we could go out and leave them all in a room together and the other kitties started to tolerate him well. The problem is since we have been back he has turned aggressive again, infact he's worse than before, he chases all the cats pulling clumps of fur out, Smartie hates him and hides from him. If I try and stroke him he smacks me with his paw, he has huge paws and it hurts, he is just dominating us all at the minute and I don't know what to do? Maybe he didn't like the fact we left him as his previous owner just dumped him and hopefully he will calm down in a couple of weeks, any advice would be appreciated, thankyou.xx

I'm wondering if the neighbor actually cleaned the boxes as often as they needed to be. Going outside of the box is a stress reaction, not an anger reaction... and if their boxes were stinky, that'd be another reason for them to do this.

Sounds like your being around helps the dynamics between the kitties, and they've had a bit of a set back.

There must be somewhere to buy Feliway (or similar) there. If you aren't already using it, I'd definitely get some. I'd also try Bach's Rescue Remedy (you should be able to find it online or in a health food store) - a few drops in the water and dab some under the kitties' chins, at the base of their tails, and behind their ears.

You may also want to try the vanilla trick instead of the Rescue Remedy. Dab them all with a little vanilla - it helps confuse the smell and may thus help with the aggression. In the meantime, any time Harvey is NOT being aggressive, praise the heck out of him and play with him or give him treats or whatever. Make sure to emphasize the positives as much as you try to discourage the bad behavior.

As to the scent of the pee... I don't know what urine neutralizers are available there. You specifically mean an enzyme cleaner, right? Because that's what's needed. As pee wicks, you can't just clean the surface of anything. You have to make sure the area is soaked, so the enzyme cleaner gets down into wherever the pee went. This can take several treatments to make sure the liquid gets to the same places. I'd definitely buy a black light to go through your home and see if there are spots you've missed. Unfortuantely, the smell of pee outside of the box will continue to encourage them to not use the box. You may want to invest in a few extra boxes to have around for a little while, even though placement might be inconvenient.

I'm so sorry you're having such a terrible set back with your kitties. Do you think you're going to have to re-introduce Harvey to the bunch again? I can't imagine my little Billy being naughty I can't add any ideas to treating the cat pee areas. Just be patient with them. I'm sure they were really stressed out while you were gone. Besides feeding them and cleaning their litter did your neighbors play or spend time with them? Poor little things, and poor you and hubby!

Harvey is a monkey, totally! I think a re-introduce t will have to be, you shoul see my black (yes black not my choice was here when we moved in) stairs and landing carpet, he's been chasing the other cats and its just covered in fur, I need a new hoover as mines about blown up. Billy I don't think is a problem, he has never peed and is so laid back I am suprised he can stand up(love that man cat) Tonight we have moved everything out of the lounge and used the urine nuetralier (it is an enzyme cleaner) all over and the difference in smell is amazing, hopefully this will help. Thanks LDG for the tips on feliway and Bachs, I like the sound of the vailla and I will get some.
Harvey I always try and cuddle and fuss him but he just attacks me at the minute, he's like a boxing cat. My hubby said he is fed up of him and if he doesn't improve he will have to go :-(, there is no way I would let that happen though (would rather kick hubby out) and yes patience is the key. xx

So sorry the balance in your house was upset by you being gone! I hope the enzyme cleaner will work to get all the cat pee out of your floors.

By the way, Rescue Remedy is available in Boots in England, at least at the Boots in Manchester Airport.... I saw it there last month.

Best of luck with Harvey too... poor guy, he's been through a lot!

Thanks, I have used rescue remedy myself and I got it from Tesco, it is really good, I had no idea that you could use it on cats.x
