I was at work today when I suddenly got dizzy and sick. I tried to make it the ladies room but I was so dizzy that one of my co-workers had to hold me up and help me get there. I almost passed out!

I guess I was as white as a sheet and they called an ambulance to take me to the hospital! I had a stroke in Dec 2004, so we were not taking any chances. They did x-rays, blood work and a CT Scan which was all normal.

They don't know what caused the dizziness, but think it was because I have had a bad cold. They sent me home with instructions if it happens again to come back. I need to call my doctor for a followup and stay home from work tomorrow.

Sigh... with DH's medical problems and now mine, this is going to be an expensive year!!!!

What had you been doing the 10-20 minutes before this episode happened - were you standing? Were you a bit warm at all? Have you been keeping hydrated?

I had a heart attack a few months ago that set me back on my rear. Since then I've had a couple of those dizzy spells--the only thing that they could come up with was that my blood pressure might have gone too low.

Hope things work out

In your case you need to get that checked out. There could still be a bit of damage that your heart it recovering from. Blood pressure can fall and cause lightheadedness like that, but you need to make sure it wasn't an arrhythmia causing it.

Were you eating? Perhaps your sugar dropped too low? I'm hypoglycemic and have those fuzzy dizzy moments myself if I don't watch it,.

Over the river and through the woods...
I'm glad things turned out ok at the ER. I almost passed out at work once and had to be assisted out but it was my own stupid fault...gave blood and didn't eat after
.

Sometimes the body just does weird things. I went to the emergency room earlier this year for a seizure but they still can't figure out what caused it. Hopefully, in your case, it was just a sudden drop in blood suger or something simple like that. Definitely something to be looked at, but easily controlled. The fact that they didn't find anything at the ER is a good thing!

I was sitting at my desk taking calls. When it started, I got very hot and clammy feeling. I couldnt wait to get the rep I was speaking to off the phone. She was one of the clueless reps that couldnt find her way out of a paperbag. I had a cup of iced water and had been sipping this, but I need to drink more.

I had two toaster waffles with margarine and syrup for breakfast about 1 1/2 hrs previously. They gave me the print out for my bloodwork and my glucose was 98. Don't know anything about that.

I have high BP and did take my bp pill this morning. My bp in the ambulance was 154/102, so it wasn't caused by low bp. Besides bloodwork and ct scan, they x-rayed my chest and did an EKG. They covered all bases because of my stroke almost 6 years ago. Tomorrow, I am going to call my doctor for a followup appointment.

Actually, that's not true. It could have been caused by a sudden fall in BP. Even those with high BP can have it happen. By the time the ambulance arrived and they took your BP the stress of the event would have definitely brought you BP back up.

Have you ever had momentary lightheadedness if you suddenly stand?

My theory, because it's so common in women, is that either due to being a bit dehydrated or another cause, your blood pressure suddenly fell. It's not as common when sitting, but it can happen. You then had all the symptoms of a vasovagal episode - minus the fainting, though you came close. Hence why they couldn't find anything when they checked it - it's hard to see a "hiccup" in the autonomic nervous system after the fact unless it can be recreated.

My suggestion is for you to take it easy. Stay hydrated, add some protein to your breakfast (sticks with you longer), don't get too warm, if you have another one of these episodes lay down, and make that follow up appointment with your doctor.

I hope it doesn't happen again. It can be pretty upsetting if it's not something you're used to happening (sadly, I'm used to it
) and if you don't know what triggered it.

Well, I have an appointment with my primary care doctor today. He is the doctor that treated me for my stroke 6 years ago. My then doctor couldn't even be bothered to call and see how I was, (he didn't have hosp privileges) so I switched to my current one. Hopefully he will have some answers for me as to why I almost passed out Wednesday. He is also DH's doctor. We will find out the results of his tests on Tuesday.

I will let ya all know what he says.

It sounds like something that happened to my Dad 14 years ago. He passed out at work and went to the doctor and they couldn't find anything wrong. But it happened again about a week later. Since then it's been an ongoing thing. He's seen over 150 "specialists" in every body part you can think of from all around the world and to this day the only thing they can all agree on is 'it's not normal'. At first, they thought it was something neurological, but after countless scans they couldn't find anything. Then they thought maybe it was his heart, so they gave him a pacemaker, but still no change. Then they thought it was sleep apnea, then an inner ear infection, etc. I hope yours was nothing like this.

Did they do a full autonomic work up on him? While it's more common in women, guys can have issues with it, too. And unless a doctor is familiar with the autonomic nervous system, they won't know what to measure and won't see anything.

I test out fine on labs and routine tests, yet fail various autonomic tests.

Of course, the fun part is that just about everything will affect the ANS so finding if there's a root cause can be tedious.
