This starts out with an explanation of what was. Up to a week or so ago, we had two German Shepherds, and three cats. The five of them got along well. Then we take in a German Shepherd puppy...Heidi. Here's her pic.

Well, up to Heidi's arrival, our oldest cat Sam (female), kept pretty much to herself. It seems that Heidi showed some interest in Casper (male). Now, it could be that Heidi has never seen a cat before, but her interest was only in Casper. Sam started to protect Casper from Heidi. It gets to the point of her standing in between them, or her fuzzing out twice as large, and chasing Heidi away. It's a riot to watch.

When all that started, Sam started to sleep next to Casper, and licking him all over. None of our cats ever reacted with each other that way. It seems that Sam has declared an affinity for Casper and will defend and protect him no matter what. She has turned into the alpha animal of the house.

For those of you with multiple animals, has one singled out themselves as an alpha animal?

Heidi is lovely. Our newest cat Smudge is going for alpha position in a big way, most of the dogs keep out of his way and with the other cats there is a lot of josteling for position at the moment.

Utu is the alpha kitty here, he's the oldest and only one who is neutered. Kuura and Tomu haven't got a chance against Utu, but things changed when Luna arrived last November. She is the only female kitty here, and definitely trying to challenge Utu's position. She has been doing it from when she was 6 months old (is now 14 months) and Utu doesn't quite know how to handle her.. We shall see what happens when she gets older. Women, always trying to make things their way.
We call her 'Führer' or 'Führerin' when she starts bossing around (she's german)... (bad joke, I know).

Heidi needs a *cuteness alert*
I would love to see Sam all "fizzed-out"!!! I hope that Heidi stops "eyeing" Casper - but bravo for Sam for stepping up to the plate

I love GS dogs
My RB Tasha was WGS/Husky and the best friend kitties could have, either side of the Bridge

Gorgeous GS!!! I have a big soft spot for them, my RB dog Ulli was the best GS
Never harmed another animal or growled at a person.

Hoshi tries to show his alpha male dominance at home. I think the fact he's stout and muscular helps him be the alpha. We call him the enforcer sometimes now
