Help! Kitten peeing outside box

I wonder if someone can help my cat and I. I joined just for advice on this. I attempted to skim through the peeing sticky but it's pretty lengthy.

I have a 5 month old female indoor cat. I've had her from she was 2 months old and from the first night we got her she was using her litter box without prompt. No problems. But for the last month she has been peeing beside her litter box. She still uses it for pooping, just not peeing lol

Originally we had her litter box in a small carpeted area at the entrance of our home. When she started to pee on the carpet beside her box we moved her box inside to the wooded floor area and banned her from the entrance but the problem has persisted. When i catch her peeing I firmly say "No!" and put her in her litter box. I've dabbed the pee with tissue then dabbed her litter try with the tissue to get her to recognise that as her pee area. I clean up the area she pees thouroughly so that there is no scent left whatsoever.

There is no other animals in our home and she is unspayed as of yet due to her age. We scoop her litter box every time she uses it(as the smell is unbearable lol) and clean it out atleast once or twice a week. I've tried putting down 2 different litter boxes but she just used both for pooping lol and peed beside both of them. It is definately not spraying.

We haven't taken her to the vet about the problem as of yet but from what i've been reading it seems like it must be urinary tract problem and she will be brought this weekend if the problem isn't sorted.

Thanks in advance for any advice offered.

What are you using to clean with?

It would be better if you took her to the vet sooner rather than later. If it is an infection or crystals it could make her very ill in just a few short days.

Cat feces and urine should smell bad, but not so bad that you have to scoop every time right after she goes. Either the litter you're using isn't doing it's job very well or the food has created a problem. What does her stools look like? Are they what smells the worst? Or does her urine smell very strongly, too?

I agree a urinary tract infection is most likely. it hurts to pee and she blames the box, so avoids using it. Don't wait any longer, bring her in now.

Welcome to TCS, please let us know what you find out.

It's her stool that smells. They vary, sometimes very dark and hard. Sometimes light and soft and sometimes it's just out right diarrhea. We don't change what we feed her though. "Felix Kitten" wet sachet food. She's always hungry and we feed her ALOT. Still every time we're at the kitchen she's right behind looking for food and begging everytime someone's eating infront of her.

Her urine doesn't smell at all really. It did when she was peeing on the carpet because I never noticed until it started to smell of ammonia. But no, her fresh urine doesn't smell.

I'm cleaning it with orange scented surface cleanser. I've also tried vinegar.

You mentioned crystals? Thats worrying because one area I found she urinated in had what seemed like salt crystals. I thought this was normal for urine. No? I'm getting a little worried now, is my cat sick? I just assumed from her energy and appetite she was fine.

Thanks for the welcome.

The inconsistent stools and hunger may indicate parasites. Has she been de-wormed?

I believe so, we got her from a shelter when she was 2 months old and was given her shots and deworming before leaving. She couldn't have got them since leaving the shelter because she's an indoor cat with no other cats in our home. I've never noticed any worms in her stool or noticed her over cleaning her butt... quite the opposite I wish she would clean it more often lol

Oh boy, this explains a lot... please take your baby to the vet ASAP. No, it is not normal; the crystals are not good - they most likely indicate a very painful condition, and can develop into larger Bladder stones; they irritate the urinary tract, and also can be associated with an UTI. This is a disease and need treatment and proper diet. To answer your question, yes, she is very likely sick.

Please, do not delay a vet visit take her ASAP.

Also, an orange cleaner does nothing - you need an enzyme cleaner...

The reason why she urinates out of the box is that she associates the box with the pain, so she thinks, in her kitty mind, that by peeing outside, she will feel no pain

Cats are amazing at hiding their pain. You'd probably have had to follow her to the litter box and watched her when she peed to tell she was in any discomfort.

I have a male, who had a partial block and couldn't pee. He was still playing with the other cats and eating - though I caught it very early in him so it's likely that he just wasn't that sick, yet.

If she has crystals you'll have to change her food. I'm not sure what is offered over there, but if your vet recommends a prescription food, no matter how expensive it is, take their advice and try it. If that food has a wet variety either use it or use it along with the dry if she'll eat it.

Hopefully as she gets better you'll be able to correct the inappropriate peeing. If treatment and proper cleaning doesn't help you may have to retrain her to use the litter box.

Thanks for your advice guys. I've booked her in for a checkup for tomorrow morning. Unfortunately this is as soon as she can be seen. I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes. Got my fingers crossed that she's just a naughty kitty lol I've put down tin foil where she's been peeing to try and collect a urine sample.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid now that I think she's sick but she seems in a strange mood this morning. She's going into the hall and laying by herself. She normally has to be in the room I'm in, following me from room to room. Playing for a few seconds and then becoming very disinterested and going to lay down then playing a little again. She also pooped right beside her box this morning, not in it. She never does this. I'm getting really very worried.

She really is the sweetest cat. Her name is Jynx. She's strange though lol She doesn't doesn't meow or hiss or howl, Only chirrups, Alot. lol I hope she's ok.

Thanks again.

Yeah, sounds like box aversion, probably due to pain, since you are seeing crystals in the urine... Make sure to mention that to the vet and demand a urinalysis. He should prescribe some meds and put her on urinary diet. She will feel better. You also need to buy a good enzyme cleaner - I only trust two: Nok out and anti-icky-poo.
Please please update us, ok?

Well took her to the vets today and wanted to let you know how it went.

Yes, she has Cystitis. She was given 2 shots and a course of anti-biotics. I took a pee sample along with me which I collected from a sheet of tin foil I placed where she usually pee's, which seemed to speed the whole process along. We were in and out in a half hour. We also found out she's 2 months older than we thought! She's 7 months, too old to be feeding kitty food which didn't help matters. We've also booked her in for a spaying. She couldn't have behaved better.

I got an enzyme cleaner and cleaned all her usual spots. Just need to retrain her to pee in her box. If someone could point me in the direction of a topic that discusses this that would be really great.

I can't thank you, Carolina, Otto and Strange Wings enough, you've been a great help.

Oh good, I am glad you got your baby to the vet!
Get a bag of Cat Attract Litter - it come in a red bag. If they don't have, kitten attract will do it too.
Here is a rebate form for a free bag (valid for the largest bag too!) http://www.preciouscat.com/pdf/Free_...ll_8-17-06.pdf

Make sure to put 2 uncovered litterboxes, in a quiet place for her...

Good luck!

Carolina, nice gesture with the coupon, but the OP lives in the Republic of Ireland.

Thanks for the update, and good job getting her right in! She'll be feeling much better now.

I'm going to suggest however that you bring in a stool sample to check for parasites. Most kittens have them and often a single de-worming is not enough.

What's your baby's name?

As for retraining, you may not have to. Once the pain is gone she may forget about it and go right back to being a tidy little kitty.

You could get some Cat Attract litter to help her have success in that direction. I've never used it, but everyone here who has raves about it.

Do you think that would matter? Worth a try anyway. It's a rebate, not a coupon, they can print out the form, buy the litter, follow the instructions and mail it to Colorado from Ireland, surely?

But how would a company in Colorado reimburse someone in Ireland, even if the product is sold in Ireland and we don't know that it is? How would the Irish poster be able to redeem the rebate, which would be in USD?

I'm so glad you heeded advice and took Jynx to the vet! (I wish other people were as prompt with vet care as you were )

Did they suggest future treatment? Will they want her back in for a follow up urinalysis (they should) after treatment?

This thread should cover tips and tricks to retraining a cat. It's a little lengthy but that's just because there's a lot of good information there.

Carolina: Thanks so much for the coupon. I've found a UK site that stocks it. It's fine that the coupon doesn't work over here, if it gets my bubs to stop warping my floor I would gladly pay double. lol

Otto: Her name is Jynx because she's a little black cat but she almost never gets called it. It's always bubs or kitums... I don't know why lol
The vet suggested that after we put her onto adult cat food that if her stools are still inconsistent that we de-worm again after her spaying in 3 weeks. Which is what I will certainly do.

Strange Wings: Ha thanks but ofcourse. Hated the thought of her being in pain. Luckily though the vets was just a 2 minute drive from my home, not very busy and very reasonably priced. Though I have to admit the thought of having clean floors again did spur me on also. lol
He didn't mention a follow up, but if the problem persists I will definitely mention it to him when I take her for her spaying in 3 weeks.

Money converts. I've sent US Money Orders to the UK and Canada. The recipients had no trouble cashing them. Rebates come in check form. Just take it to your bank. For the price of that litter, I would think it would be worth a try.

Hopefully it won't be an issue anyway. Keep us posted on your Jynx.

I have a black kitten too. Her name is Queen Eva. but she often gets called Baby, BayBay, Bebbeh, and Bèbè. Bèbè is her favorite.
