My cat on occasion will lie down in her litterbox. I originally thought it was a way to indicate her displeasure at being left alone (this first occured when I returned home after being gone for a couple of days) but today she repeated the behavior after sitting on my lap, getting dinner and some kitty treats. Does anyone know anything about this behavior or has anyone observed this and been able to connect it with a particular physical or emotional issue?

Hello MichaelMoyer1,

I can't say my kitty Nomar does this alot
but when I am cleaning his litter box he is right there watching my every move.
When I go to pour the litter in the box, he is inside the box looking up at me, as if to say "what are you doing with my belongings?". Then I take him out and pour the litter and he jumps back in and rolls in the litter box..
I have no clue why he rolls in the litter.
Thank goodness he only does it when I pour new litter in...

at the shelter where I volunteer, lots of the cats sit in their litter boxes too. I don't really know why though. My best guess as to why they do it is because they sit in litty tiny cages, and there's not really anywhere else to sleep. but I am assuming your kitty has more than a itty bitty cage. other than that, i don't know what to tell you.

When cats hide in the litter box on a regular basis it usually indicates something is wrong or they are scared of something. Laying where they use the bathroom is usually a warning sign.
