Hello everyone!
After lurking for sometime, I tried to register and participate several weeks ago. For some unknown reason, I never got the e-mail allowing me to complete my registration. So I could login, but not change anything, and today is the first day that any options to post presented themselves.
So much thanks to Abby'smom who I e-mailed a few days ago and seems to have straightened this out for me.
I live about 30 miles west of Chicago in an old house in an old neighborhood. I've had cats for 50 years. Right now I have 5. They all came from my local shelter where I volunteer one afternoon a week. Three are black (Black Cats Rule!) and two are DLH gray ones (look like Nebelungs, but aren't I'm sure). Two are male (which makes three female). They are all neutered and microchipped (conditions of leaving the shelter), and have all their claws (Yeah to Sticky Paws for saving my furniture). They are indoor cats. Most of them had issues that prevented them from being adopted and were at the shelter from 10 months to 3.5 years. That one that was there 3.5 years was the "oldest resident" at the shelter when he was "pet of the week" in the paper and I went and got him. We were on the front page of the local paper because of that. He is "Claude" and I've had him almost 3 years now. He's lame, big, black, and very possessive of me.
The rest of them have other problems, but really they have all turned out very well as pets for me. One I just brought home last Wednesday, so she is still living in the guest room and hiding under the bed. But she is eating and everything else she should be, so I know in time she will be fine. She's very shy anyway - the reason she wasn't going to be adopted, besides being a black cat (too many of them). And I said nearly a year ago that if no one takes Tonya, I'd take her eventually. So I did. She's teeny - only about 7 pounds. She came into the shelter at 6 months and soon had two kittens. She's about 3 now.
They all have a story, but that's enough to start. I'm totally a cat person, liking cats more than people. However, it's nice to find people I can talk to about my cats. That's part of the fun of going to the shelter to help. The people there never tire of hearing about my cats (at least they act that way), and since they know all of them, they want to know how they are. I have lots of cat friends and "projects" at the shelter, too.
So, I'm glad to finally be here.
