Hi everybody, my cat has been having a problem with the wellness dry food he's eating, his stools have been soft and my vet said this food is too rich for him. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good dry food that isn't too rich. He is also struggling with some kind of allergy so it would have to be fish based. He has tried NB green pea and duck but had to come off of that righe away because it was too rich. I don't know if we should go back to dry Nutro or what. Here is the ingredients of what's in the wellness he's eating now and not itching. Please help if you can. Thanks so much!!!!

Wellness Salmon, Salmon Meal & Deboned Turkey Dry
Salmon, Salmon Meal, Whitefish Meal, Rice, Ground Barley, Ground Rice, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a natural source of Vitamin E), Deboned Turkey, NatUral Chicken Flavor, NatUral Fish Flavor, Cranberries, Olive Oil, Chicory Root Extract, Cranberry Extract Powder, Cranberry Fiber, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Thiamine Mononitrate, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B-12 Supplement), Choline Chloride, Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Yucca Schidigera Extract, Dried Kelp, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Chondroitin Sulfate, Lactobacillus Plantarum, Enterococcus Faecium, lactobacillus Casei, lactobacillus Acidophilus, Taurine, Rosemary Extract

Here is all the food he's tired...
Nutro Max Cat Salmon Dry
She was on this excusably for about four months she wasn't itching or breakout out and her stools looked healthy.

Nutro Max Cat Chicken Wet
Then that fall two things happened we started adding this wet food into her diet and our forced air furnace was turned on and that's when she started itching bad and breaking out

Natural Balance Ultra Premium Dry with Natural Balance Original Premium Canned
(didn't stop her itching)

Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Green Pea & Duck Dry with Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Green Pea & Duck Canned
Shortly after starting this food she had to go to the emergency vet because of a block, a vet there said this food was too rich for her and her stomach always did look puffy when she was eating it

Hill's Prescription Z/D Low Allergen Dry
She also did terrible on this food, she always through up after eating, her stools were soft and she was only urinating once a day. We don't want to do another hydrolyzed diet again. By the time we started feeding this food it was May so I don't know if her itching got better because of the food or because we turned the furnace off and could open the windows.

Wellness Salmon, Salmon Meal &
Deboned Turkey Dry
She hasn't had one breakout since starting this on 8/21, I wish we could keep her on this food but our vet wants to change it because she's been having soft stools.

Since you're trying to find out what his allergy is it doesn't make this easy. Orijen does make a fishy food, NB also has pea and salmon. California Natural has a herring and sweet potato, too.

I would put her on the nutro salmon if she was ok on that and keep her on just that for a while then add a canned food in on at a time see what happens.

If she handles the dry ok look ingrediants over and see if you can nail it down of what the issue is

The Evo Herring and Salmon works great for my kitties. Wellness gave one of mine the absolutely worst smelling stools. I have one who is very partial to fisn so I introduced the Evo and the stinky poo cat is now doing great.

Orijen 6-fish is a little less rich than Evo Salmon and Herring which is pretty much the highest protein least carbs in the market today as far as fish foods goes. I feed 1/2 and 1/2 mixture and my IBD cat, who is very sensitive does great with it

Blue Longevity is fish based and not too rich. Might be worth a shot.
Also the Nutro Salmon flavor actually uses chicken meal as the first ingredient, so if your cat is allergic to fowl, it might be best to try something else.
NB LID foods like the one you used aren't very rich at all. Protein and fat, at 30% and 12% respectively, are about as low as you'll find in a dry cat food. Maybe your cat is allergic to the peas. I read in a post by sharky that peas are actually an allergen for cats.
Anyway, I would imagine a high fiber food would help firm up/move along those stools. My cousin's cat had a similar issue, and once they got her on high fiber (6% or 8%) food, she is doing well. Halo Spots Stew sensitive formula has a fish based, high fiber food.

Thanks for your help everybody, I actually just got back from the vet with Paulie because now he's having diarrhea. They did blood test and said if everything's fine they will have to put him on a 10 day dose of pred and then even go to a specialist where they would take a biopsy. I kind of wanted to just try switching his food first and putting him a a pro biotic for a while, which do you think is the best option?

I just read that some cats can be allergic to chicken but not chicken fat, which is myabe why Paulie is doing ok on this wellness. Does anyone know if he could be allergic to chicken when it's in wet food only? Or if he's allergic to corn syrup will he be allergic to corn? I wish he could stay in this do you think if we gave him a probiotic it might clear everything up or does that only work for a short time?
Orijen 6-fish do you think this food would be less rich than the wellness he's on now?

Chicken fat is a ?? with allergies... realize it is processed and modern manufacturing can yeild it NOT 100% fat...

Cooked vs raw allergies are possible not very likely canned vs dry vs home cooked

Corn syrup is like chicken fat ... it should not contain any proteins thus not cause allergies

which wellness

Sharky - would the new Taste of the Wild All Fish formula work, you think?

I find EVO to be quite rich. If Archie gets too much as a treat he will get the runs.
