If a cat knows another cat is in a bad condition do they just give them their space?

Metro is giving our new cat Shebrie a lot of respect and space. He can tell that she is blind and special. He's extra patient with her.

When Fred started getting really old, the others seemed to care for him like he cared for them as kittens. They would groom him, catch him presents, (he taught them all how to hunt) and cuddle with him. They seemed to go out of their way to not bother the old man when he wanted his space. It was very sweet.
I really miss his kitten raising abilities. The latest crew are all so ill mannered and bratty. Fred would have gotten them in line right away.

my experience is they harrass and attack a weaker/sick cat.

I lost my Coco 2 weeks ago and my other cats left her alone when she got real bad.
They knew she was very sick.
Coco was 18.6 years old and until her last month slept with the other cats.
None of them attacked or bothered her when she got bad.

IMO, it depends on the hierarchy. When Twitch wasn't feeling well, no one messed with her as Lily (her companion kitty) stuck up for her & defended her. When Molly doesn't feel well, they all go after her (except for Margo, her companion kitty).

Twitch is on the top of the totem pole, while Molly is down towards the bottom.

When I just had Sphinx, Luvbug and Kuce they left each other alone when one was ill. Of course Luvbug joined the family 10 days before Sphinx passed. Both Luvbug and Kuce knew he was passing on and gave him space and checked in on him.

Now when one of the three are ill (Kuce, Luvbug and Lil' Jag) they check in on each other. No issues yet.

One of our cats was having a very off day, we decided to wait until the next day and if she was still the same, we would bring her to the vet. Our other cat gets on with her most of the time (!) but they are not overly affectionate with each other generally. However when the first cat was feeling poorly, the second cat lay beside her and put her paw around her and cuddled her to sleep!!! We were really worried then! Brought first cat to vet next morning, she had a very small abcess which we had treated promptly and she was fine after two days. There has not been any cuddling since!!! So in our case, cat number 2 was definitely picking up on cat number 1's pain and was comforting her. Aw!
