I think Zimmie definitely understands what I am saying. She definitely understands laughter. She definitely understands when she has done something naughty.

What about your cats?

For the most part yes. I do have a few that I feel if they were human would not fit into society well at all tho

Ben is BY far the best of my cats-he was a bottle baby and I always say if a cat could talk it would be him. Hes so in tune with me

I certainly think they know SOME of what I say. They all know their names, they know the word "treats".
Osiris knows when I say "kiss" and he'll literally put his lips to mine. They also know the angry tone of voice if they're bad.

I've always wanted to bottle-feed a kitten.

I think Nora thinks she is a dog or a person instead of a cat. She knows "eat?" (will run into the kitchen and sit by her food), "cow" (she LOVES eating beef, so when we say cow she gets ALL excited and RUNS to the kitchen), "treats" (she runs into the laundry room, which is where we keep the treats), "bellies" (she comes over to you and flops onto her back so you can rub her belly), "bed" (she knows it is bedtime so she runs into our bedroom), "outside" (she LOVES when she is allowed to go outside and catch bugs, so she runs to the front door), and I am sure there are others but those are the only ones I can think of at the moment. She can also tell the difference in emotions, she knows when we are happy, when we are sad (she will try to comfort you), and when we are mad. She is a funny, funny cat...er, person! lol

I'm gonna see what happens when I say "cow" to Zimmie. She'll probably think I have lost my mind.

The seat of a John Deere tractor
Jack is by far the cleverest - he knows go for a ride, get in the tractor, knows truck from tractor, hurry up, go for a walk, feed horses, look out and probably a lot more but he doesn't understand no, get out, go eat OUT of the Jeep. They all know (outside cats) the call of cats cats water, supper, etc and most will come when you call their names. Da Lip's favourite words are supper and treats but he also knows beddtime, tv time, and seem to understand normal ramblings and acknowledges things with mrrrrrrrr. Da Magpie learned kiss when she was just a bitty thing and wanted to chew on any part of me she could, and a bit of persistance and redirection taught her to give kisses - her version, just closing her mouth over the tip of my nose. These two also don't understand no, get down, stop, etc. Oddly, they all learned whoa, get over, come over back up, quit but then again so did the horses and THEY respond from a distance with the appropriate response to the command.

He probably does but I don't think he really cares all that much, because what I have to say is not always related to what he wants from me..It's far more important to him for ME to understand HIM when he meows in all kinds of different voices, but the majority of the time he's either telling me to do something for him or to stop doing something he doesn't like

I'm pretty sure Pandora can read my mind. She always seems to know what I'm gonna do, whether it's get the treats out or her favorite toy or when it's bed time.

Everybody knows their names and they know simple little tricks I've taught them. Teaching them things is so much different than training a dog, I always tell my husband to remember that they are cats and you can "request" they do something rather than command. LOL

I think for the most part they do know what I am talking about.

Mine know some words. No, get, down, back, here, bedroom, kitty, and their names. I'm not sure how many other words they know because they're very good at picking up on my tone of voice.

Some know a few more words than others - Tomas seems more clever than the others in this area.

Maia is very smart! If I ask her 'You wanna go outside?' she runs to the back door. We have a back roof top where I have a lot of plants, she goes outside with me and knows 'Lets go back inside'. She knows 'Want some food?' of course, although it is not often I have to ask
. She knows the basics 'stay', 'down', 'no', 'out', 'go', and her favorite 'Do I have a pressie for you?' which is usually Fancy Feast.......

Gracie knows "cookie". She always begs for one when she hears that word. Casey knows "No!" because we're forever saying that to him LOL and Matilda and Charlie respond to "Who's hungry?"

Playing with Jazzy & Ginga.
Ginga knows so many words, if we say, "Hop up!" to her, she just jumps right up (pretty painful!
) She knows laughter and seems to smile when she does something that we think is funny. She knows the normal words such as, "Breakfast" and "Dinner" If we were to say good morning or good evening or good afternoon, she replies with a hearty mewl. Jazzy doesn't know as much but she's still learning words, she's learnt, "One more!" Which means that she should meow again. She knows the simple, "Breakfast!" She loves the word "Brush" and rushes towards us excitedly. Of course, they know their names. They (and we) learn something new everyday!

She does understand a handful of certain words, many behavioral cues, and most voice tones.
But compared to the dogs she doesn't know much. Or she doesn't let me know she knows

Sweetie sometimes follows instructions I give him. Here are a couple of examples. Sometimes when I come home from work and see he hasn't eaten too much, I'll tell him to eat and he'll immediately go to his food bowl and start eating. One time I was petting Sweetie, but I could see he was torn between sitting in the window and being with me. So I said "if you want to sit in the window, go ahead" and he immediately went to the window. There are other things he does, but those are the two things I can think of right now. He seems so smart that I sometimes ask him if he can understand me, and he ALWAYS shakes his head "no".
