8 year old loosing weight fast

I think she was born around 2002, spayed in 2005, showing signs of blindness in 2009, now she is not eating, definitely loosing weight. I can feel the prominence of her spine. She seems in good spirits. Moves slow. Sits on my lap and purs for a minute then just sits quietly.

I took her to the vet last year for the blindness and didn't get any useful advice. I did get a bill for $73.

Maybe its her time.

You need to find a vet and get bloodwork done
post #3 of 23
Agree that bloodwork is in order. I would go see a vet as soon as you can.

Keep her eating even if that means to force feed that with a sirynge until you see the vet - that is very important, otherwise you risk liver failure. Try Baby food (no garlic, no onion) warming up the food, do what you can, but do not just leave it up to her to eat.

It is not just her time to die, she is far too young to be dying... Take her to another vet ASAP.

what are you suspecting? details please on the blood work

Senior panel... I am NOT a VET ... but the symtoms could be diabetes , kidney failure, hyperthyroid and many other 'senior" conditions... make sure to ask if thyroid is part of the panel or a extra test

If $$ is an issue , call around and see about payments ( easier if you are already a patient) , care credit , local shelter( some have ER funds, others know of Good vets who are less $$$)

I agree with the others.

Your cat needs to go the vet. No two ways about it. An 8 yr old cat is not old. I have had cats live till 22 years old.

You must be an advocate for your animal. Ask questions of the doctor. If not satisfied, ask again.

This could be so many treatable things.

Do not delay...follow all the advice given by other posters and get your kitty in. She is showing you she is sick.

I'm with the others, take her to the vet!!! My Deli was 8 yo and stopped eating; it turned out to be lymphoma. Feed her with a syringe if nessesary, I'd recommend Nutri-Cal as it is very calorie dense.

She saw the Vet today. He confirmed a serious case of fleas and suspects tape worms as well. He treated with a shot for the worms and advantage for the fleas.

Im told she should bounce back fast.....unless there is another underlying problem.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

Did he do blood tests?
Fleas can cause anemia and kill cats.
I have seen it happen before.

No blood work....anemia is present by evidence of small flakes of blood clots Im told. She is fine. Stable and quiet.

My concern is she is barely eating and drinking, at least so far as I can see. I put a can of moist high quality cat food out and she just licks at it....not taking bites. This might take time for recovery. She weights 6 lbs. I don't know her original weight but I suspect she was at 9 lbs before loosing weight. Other wise, she purrs, sits on my lap, gets around just fine.

You have to get a blood test to see how bad anemia is.
It is a pcv test.
Also the gums can turn white from anemia.
Sometimes the anemia is so bad from fleas cats need blood transfusions or they will die.
I have seen it happen.

If anyone is still following this post......

This cat weighed 6.4lbs on Sept 23. She was treated for tape worms by injection and given Advantage-Multi for fleas and I'm told advantage-multi also addresses other worm types.

Today I weighed her again. She is at 5.4 lbs.....still loosing weight. I called the vet and expressed this concern. He said she should be alright.

I assume loosing more weight is normal after being treated for tape worms before we bottom out and start gaining again.

Comments?

I would take her to another vet and get a second opinion. Is she drinking well? We have a cat who is a little older than this start to go down winter before last. When he took him the vet said he thought he was dying (he is really morbid so we switched, every time we took an animal he would be like if they die it is their time to go and sometimes it would be just for vaccines so that was weird), anyway he said he would keep him over night and give him an IV that he seemed to be a little dehydrated, he bounced back really quickly after he was hydrated and now he weighs over 10 pounds and is getting a little bit of a belly and he was very thin when we took him into the vet for not thriving well.

It sounds like your cat improved, Britt0285. My cat eats very small amounts, and I cant tell if she is drinking much. A vet tech suggested giving her moist kitten food which is a little higher in fat and protein.

timotb, if I were you, I would take this cat to a more proactive vet. This extreme weight loss is not good.
Furthermore, you can't just leave it up to her to eat... If she is not eating, her liver can be affected, and soon she can go into liver failure, or get fatty liver disease - and from there recover is very very difficult. You are actually very lucky this haven't taken place yet with this weight loss and this lack of food.
She NEEDS to eat, bottom line. If she is not eating, you need to force feed her with a syringe, or try meat only baby food (no garlic, no onions)... There is also a recovery RX food called Hills A/D, very caloric and very palatable. Kitten food is also more caloric than adult food and can help her.
But if you do not force feed her, leave it out to her to eat on her own, and do not seek treatment with another vet, I am sorry to say that her chances of recovery might look grim.

.... Please see another vet and at least get a senior blood panel

Perhaps get an x-ray done as well, to rule out any tumours. Long story short....my Phoebe....13yrs 9 months died with excellent bloodwork, no temperature, no diabetes....healthy heart, clear lungs, clear upper airway......but she had lost alot of weight in the previous 7 months...probably about 6 lbs...went from 17lb to 11lb or so. Was eating fine...as active as she ever got.......then just stopped eating and drinking on a Tuesday....Vet on Wednesday...couldn't figure out what was wrong...force fed, antibiotics....she passed away in my arms on Saturday night.....Vet figures it was an undiagnosed tumour. Absolutely no warning.....I miss her so much

I've had cats with tape worms (ferals) and no, they do not have those symptoms. Yes they can lose weight, but the worst I have seen was a cat that was 2 pounds (or less) underweight.... but that cat also didn't have access to food until I got it.

What you are describing is NOT normal at all. She needs a complete bloodwork done, asap. With a extra thyriod test (this is a seperate test). It could be thyroid (treated with pills), diabetes (treated with food/meds), could be kidneys (treated with meds/food/maybe fluids), could be anemia, could be ANYTHING. That is why you need bloodwork...

The vet you went to sounds.... not so great, I've never heard of a vet seeing a cat in this condition & not recommending bloodwork. That is insane to me!

I have a cat that got liver failure & OMG you do NOT want to go through that! Cats can get liver failure in as little as 2 days from not eating. My cat had to be force fed many times per day & givin IV fluids daily for 5 months until he started eating on his own. He did not get it from not eating. Please do not let her go down this road, force feed her if you have too. She needs something in her stomach.

I hope you can get her to another vet for a second opinion, she is loosing weight wayyy too fast. It could be something easily treated, but if she doesn't get the right treatment soon it may kill her.

I hope your kitty can get the help she needs soon, sorry your vet didn't care much. There is no way this is "just" tape worms. I am sure she has tape worms, if she has fleas that bad then yes, she will have tape worms. But there is something else going on, for sure.

Many vibes for your kitty, poor thing!
