Is Katy Perry too racy for Sesame Street?

Sesame Street has announced they have decided not to air Katy Perry’s guest appearance after a clip of it released online generated a bit of a hullabaloo. In the clip, Perry sings a tweaked version of “Hot N Cold†with Elmo, but it was her relatively revealing outfit that prompted some parents to complain.
The video and rest of the article are in the link below:

Well well, interesting what generates controversy!
I'm with some of the folks who wrote their comments below the video. I doubt that pre-schoolers will even register that she is showing a bit of cleavage but jeeze, she could have worn something that covers it up. As far as I know, a top like that would not be allowed in the local high school so I can see why parents might make the connection to not wanting it on an educational show aimed at little ones.

What makes the entire outfit ridiculous is the fact that the dress technically goes up to her neck, it's just see-through mesh from the cleavage up. If they had simply used a non-see through fabric instead, there would be no controversy.

And who's to blame? The stylist or Katy Perry? Everyone seems to think she's the one to blame here, but I doubt she picked out her own clothes for the show. Most people are dressed by stylists before appearing on any TV show.

All in all, I don't think it was appropriate for her cleavage to be bouncing while she was running on a kids show. It's not Baywatch, ya know. And I think the decision not to air it was right on, but this entire thing could have been avoided if someone had thought to cover up the breasts. *shrug*

I don't get it, just like I don't get why the high schools have these dress codes...
I don't get how seeing a cleavage is bad for kids. I grew up with my parents taking me to nudist beaches as a kid, where these were lots of children, and I turned out okay...
Anyway, whatever, I guess I just don't get it but apparently everyone else does and society thinks we should cover up or else it's distracting or somehow bad...
I mean I am not against dress codes in school, but it's mostly because I don't like the idea of kids seeing school as a place to show off their clothes to their friends, not because seeing a lot of skin is distracting...

Oh, and I found that her dress was terrible, it looked like it was too small for her and it was unattractive...

Oh please... IMHO this is ridiculous.
If the outfit was wrong, why did they record the video in the first place?
These kids watch much, much worse things on TV day in and day out. Society is full of double standards, and people just want things to make an issue of it.

She looks very out of place in a kids video.

OMG!

Elmo isn't wearing pants!

agreed

I have to admit, when I first read this, I thought, “Yeah, she seems sleazy; I’m not surprisedâ€. But after watching the vid, what she’s wearing seems fine. Now I feel bad for her, I mean…I assume ones heart is in the right place if they’re on Sesame Street. And then to be told your efforts aren't appreciated?

She should have worn a different dress.

The kids probably won't even notice her outfit. My nephew saw the segments on the news and said Elmo, he certainly didn't say OMG cleavage

I'm sure kids see much worse these days, but she could have seriously worn a different dress. Hubby saw a still shot on another board yesterday and was like "well then, that looks toddler appropriate" Not like they would even register what it is they're looking at, but did the stylist/her/whoever came up with the dress idea really need it to be THAT dress?
Why can't whoever made the video simply raise her neckline digitally if they now think she's showing too much cleavage?
I personally find her to be a little skanky in general. Like others have said though, I doubt the kids in that target audience's age group will notice anything that young though, so I don't think it's such a huge deal (not major enough for them to cancel airing it).

Next time they just need to pick a better outfit...and maybe a more classy role model while they're at it.

Yeah I have to agree with that part, maybe that's why so many people had an issue with it. Because in general, she can be skanky at times. Like the California Gurls video where she's laying there naked on the puffy stuff, and the whipped creme bra (which just makes me think of something Lady Gaga would have, similar to the rifle bra in Alejandro). There's a lot of skankiness in the world today.

There's nothing wrong with what she's wearing. If kids can't handle a woman in a dress with a little cleavage, better not take them to the swimming pool, or worse yet, *gasp* the changing room.

Its not like she has much cleavage to begin with, I doubt the targeted age group of Sesame street would even know what cleavage is, let alone make a sexual connection with it.

Its our fault as parents that children are raised to view breasts in a sexual manner anyways.

the connection those kids have with breasts are more likely to be with food than with anything else ...... They barely finished breast feeding! Or is that now going to be considered immoral too? Because there are plenty of mothers breast feeding their kids to well over 1 year old...
Maybe a toddler got hungry after seeing the video and that's how they realized "Bingo"!! too much cleavage!

I agree. Seeing breasts is normal in my family. There are several babies in our family. They are all breast fed. My kids think nothing of talking to baby as he feeds. My 7 year old watched the video, She thought it was hilarious.

Even kids as young as my 19 month old are absorbing everything they see, even if they aren't able to verbalize yet.

I don't want my daughter watching anything that Katy Perry puts out there (and most of the entertainment industry for that matter), pure garbage.

Well, I think the sad thing is that song is a perfect fit for a Sesame Street segment with all its opposites.

Just put the girl in a decent outfit and your fine. I'm disappointed in the Sesame Street people for dressing her like that. I mean, let's show some common sense...... it's a little kid show. Use your brains.
I dont see anything wrong with what she is wearing. Children see people in public wearing less/more suggestive clothing every day - and arent traumatized by it.
I don't subscribe to the "They see worse other places so anything should go" idea. It's a kids show. Let's just keep it a kids show and use some common sense. No one is going to complain or be upset of she wears something a bit more conservative, so why push it and put her out there in something like that? The person in charge of that segment was an idiot.

Does anyone even take note of what Tinkerbell wears? Or is it okay since she is animated and generally not "real"? I don't partake in Katy Perry, Tinkerbell or Seasame Street but just use this as an example in double standards.

If the dress was so horrible when she filmed the appearence why didnt the producers or whoever make her change in the first place? Personally I dont find anything wrong with the video, I watched on EOnline and Ill admit my brain will go a little perverted at times but I didnt look at the video and go "OMG look at those bubbies". Now the duh common sense should have kicked in and she should have obviously had a higher neckline on the dress, mesh or no mesh there are plenty of strapless dresses that cover more than her dress did but to cancel her appearance rather than just reshooting it is a little stupid. I kinda feel bad for her even if I think her and Lady Gaga and the 'artists' like them are idiotic and too over the top.

But...but...but I LOVE Lady Gaga!

I agree completely.

i dont really care beacuse my kid is going to see the same thing on shows that we turn on but I do agree that it is a little weird on a kids show and I can see why some people are upset.

Now that we are discussing racy children's shows I just wanted to butt in for those who have kids and are worried about what they watch...

Qubo is the best children's channel you could ever invest in. I watch it ALL the time (because I'm a huge kid) and I've never once seen anything racy or objectionable on there. You can turn Qubo on at any time and there is always a good wholesome show with a good message and always educational.

I don't know about her being too racy for Sesame Street. What I do know is that my cat Mandarin loves her music, specifically her vegas song. He talks to himself and gets hyper when he hears her music.

"That's what you get for waking up with Mandarin".

Oh and he likes her hot and cold song too...
