This weekend is Korey and my 1 yr wedding anniversary. We have been saving up basically since last years wedding/honeymoon disasters, to take a mini vacation this year. So for 3 nights we will be heading out of town. Thanks in large part to my husbands work. He does programming for a cable company and the region he programs for is the place we are going...and the office there was able to get us some gift cards for our trip which is awesome

The part I am nervous about....our house sitter has been in the hospital since last week. We don't really have anyone else that can house sit which sucks. My brothers both live out of town, and my younger brother, who comes into town often to see his girlfriend, always brings his own cat, and I don't think it would be good for my cats to not only be upset that we are gone, but to have another cat in the house for the weekend.
Our friend who was set to housesit just got out of the hospital today and we can't get ahold of him. We are definitely most concerned with his health but also worried about trying to find someone else to come stay at our home!
At the least, one of my husbands friends is planning to stop by every other day if needed to feed the cats but we prefer someone being here full time...by we, I mean my husband. He doesn't think we can get away with someone just being here once a day... Our cats are spoiled by my working from home, especially the three youngest in my signature.
Korey doesn't want to leave them...we are so nervous that they will hate us when we get back! What do you all do when you have a vacation or go out of town?? Do you feel nervous and rethink your vacation because of your cats?

Hope your friend is okay and that he will be able to watch your kitties.

We just got back from a 2 week cross country drive vacation. I missed my babies, but my in-laws came over every day to feed and play with them for a bit. I dont know how long they spent over here at night but they always enjoy the kitties. My in-laws flew out to Colorado for 4 days while we were on our trip and my MIL had a friend from work come by and feed/play with them. She has plenty of pets so we weren't worried.

Never really have rethought a vacation before because of them, but also have never been in your predicament. Hope it gets worked out so you guys can enjoy your anniversary trip

I hope your friend is feeling better. If he/she isn't able to house-sit though, you should try not to worry too much about having someone stop by once a day to feed and scoop, especially for only 3 days. Cats are pretty self-sufficient, and since there are several, they should keep each other company.

They may snub you and your husband when you first get back, as if to say "What were you thinking, just leaving us like that???"
But they will get over it, probably in an hour or so.

Have fun on your anniversary trip!!!

Have a great trip! Our kitties are usually really excited to see us when we get back, and then are like "Wait... you left us! We are mad at you!"

Oh yeah, mine are always veryyyy excited to see us when we come home, never mad. Neko pouted for a few minutes after our 2 week trip, but he's very skittish and his world was turned upside down when we left - he doesn't like anyone but me and Rob. Nero and Hoshi were ALLLLL in our business when we got back

When we go camping it's usually for at least week and take the cats with us in the RV. If we go for a week-end without the RV they are ok by themselves. They free feed and I leave the lid off their food box, just in case. They also have a Drinkwell fountain and it's good for at least 2 days with no problems. If this is the first time that you've left them, I can certainly understand you being nervous about it. If someone is coming in once a day, that should be enough. They won't be mad when you get back...they will be happy to see you.

I have to admit that I call home and talk to the boys through the answering machine everyday, and let them know we are on our way home.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
If it's just for three days, I think they'd be fine with someone coming by once a day.

We simply don't take vacation anymore though LOL.

your friend is OK!

When we leave, we either hire a sitter, or have a friend drop in, or leave the auto feeder if we will only be gone overnight.

Fortunately, we love our pet sitter, and our babies love her too. Our cats are never angry when we return, they are so happy to see us. Although, I think Nova is actually a little bit disappointed when we walk in instead of the sitter. She really, really likes our sitter and the sitter has confessed that Nova is one of her favorites.

Vacation....whats a vacation???

Haha BF and I have talked forever about taking a vacation but we havent for a couple reasons, one we dont like being away from home, 2 we dont trust anyone to not pop into our house or anything while we are gone (his dad and brother have keys for the garage and house) and lastly we dont trust ANYONE to watch the cats or dogs. The dogs are the biggest problem because Franklin is psycho attached to us and gets whiney and irritating if we are gone, although it is easier to get a sitter for him because Gram has been begging us to watch him since we got him, she came close once but Bf vetoed him staying over night at Grams so she was a little sad about that. Our other dog is a Golden Retriever and theres only one person who is willing to watch him because I wont let my mom watch him since I adopted him from her, I know what will happen if we left and all the training Ive done in the past 4 mths would be out the windown and Id have back a big ball of anxiety and stress again. Im not willing to put up with that just for a weekend at the beach.

But for the cats I know for just a weekend I could just get a couple extra litter boxes and fill them and place them thru out the house and make sure their feeder is full (free fed) and get extra water dishes and have them out. But only if that were for a weekend (2-3 days) if it were longer Id have someone stay here with all the pets to watch them all. I doubt Ill ever have to go thru anything like that though, I dont have the guts to leave for a day without the furbabies let alone overnight.

I hope your sitter will be OK and will be able to take care of your furkids.

With us, vacations vary. DH seems to go more than me, although he goes primarily for union related business: Oregon, Nevada, Virginia, Tennessee, etc. And when he has to fly, I stay home (what, me fly? There aren't enough drugs in the universe to get me on a plane!). If he's going to Chicago, we'll drive and I'll go with him. Sometimes we'll go to Niagara Falls for a long weekend. But my yearly vacation is usually a long weekend in Connecticut with one of my best GFs. We'll go up around the end of October and while DH is busy at the casinos, she and I will shop at various places and do things we want to do.

We do have a pet sitter, who is wonderful with our cats. She'll come in twice a day to scoop boxes, give them food and some attention, and just make sure everything is OK. If we do go away during the summer, she'll turn the pool pump off and on. She brings our mail and newspapers in every day. She's really good.

But I still worry and wonder what the kids are doing while we're gone.

When Banshee was still alive and we'd come home from being away for a few days, she would greet us at the front door. Then she'd turn her back to us and sit down. That was her way of making sure we knew she was upset with us. I'd grovel and beg and pick her up and call her my pretty girl. And after a few minutes, just long enough that I knew she was upset, she'd start to purr again. The other cats don't care. If they're fed, they're fine.

DH is very worried about our three babies. The older ones wont care, but the three babies are very clingy, especially Billy and Joey. When we have been away for the whole day before, we come home and they run to the door and climb all over us! Billy is really good with people, he just wants held all the time, and walks around cooing when he can't find anyone...its sad

Our friend is still in the hospital. He called my husband last night and said he was feeling better but was not sure when we would be out.

We both begged just about everyone we know, and someone DH has known for years is okay with coming to our house for the weekend! yay!
