Has anyone ever had their cat's blood donated?

Thread Starter
I received an odd call from my vet yesterday asking if they could use my Lucky Pierre's blood for a cat that needed a blood transfusion. They picked Lucky because he is the largest and beefiest cat in my household. Unfortunately Lucky is an indoor/outdoor cat and they could not use his blood because he goes outside. They didn't ask about any of my other cats (too many are either chronically ill or elderly).

But it got me curious. Has anyone ever had their cat used as a blood donor? What was your experience with it?

On the other hand, has anyone had a cat that needed donated blood, and do you know where they came up with the blood?

My friends cats donate blood and I had a few cats that needed blood transfusions.
My Coco who I just lost had a blood transfusion July 23rd.
They used one of the vet techs cats from the er vet.
They also have a registry for cats that give blood.
They check the cats for everything before they can donate the blood.
Also my Lucy and Stripe both had many blood transfusions.
Here is some info on blood donation.

Most cats are either type A or B.
Then some are A/B.
The A/B cats can donate blood to type A or B.

I have no experience, but I have a friend whose cat required a transfusion once. I believe that in her case, the veterinary hospital involved (a large one) had some donor rescue cats on "staff."

It is a great thing to do, but have your cat throughly checked before donating blood... One member here lost one completely healthy cat as he crashed after doneting blood...
