It seemed like such a good idea at the time

So I booked some vet appts - I've been switching vets & missed someone's shots for a year or two.

I booked in 7 cats to get them updated on vaccs Wed AM - Twitch, Lily, Eden, Dory, Ophelia Rose, Gumby, & Molly.

But then I've noticed now that it's gotten cooler/wetter, Captain Nemo (newbie farm kitty neutered in June) is coughing. It's not in his lungs that I can tell, it's nothing like I've seen before.

And Margo's OCD licking spot is 3-4x the size of normal & nasty/weepy.

So now I'm taking 9 cats to the vet on Wed AM.

After I booked the appts, I'm thinking, how am I going to fit 9 cats into my car? And am I really going to want to see that bill?

Wish me luck - several of the original 7 are nightmares at the vet, and Nemo's quite "undomesticated" when it comes to getting him in a carrier!

Oh my goodness, girl! Do you have to do that all on your own?? You need a little wagon or something. LOL, that'd be something to see, nine carriers stacked on a little red wagon getting wheeled into the vet clinic.

You are a brave, BRAVE woman!

Can you recruit some helpers??? Wow, that is a load of kitties.

We used to have to make two trips to the rabies clinics to get everyone in!

Good grief! We can only get 3 carriers seat belted in the car at a time, with only one human, so usually only schedule 2 at a time, so we can have 2 humans and 2 cats per visit.

Luckily, our Vet is only 2 miles away, though, so it's not too bad to make that trip a few times to get all 4 seen!

Our vet is literally a 5 minute walk and under a minutes drive away, and I STILL wouldn't try to bring all 9 of mine in at once.

You know, I've actually had people ask me if we live where we do because the vet is so close?

Try to describe it, compare it to something. For example my kittens coughs sounded dry and almost like scraping a finger across a top (cut part) of a cardboard box. Apparently that's more of the sound of a inflammation type cough.

Chances are even if everyone had been up to date on vacs you'd still have troubles. Nothing is ever simple.

Did you find someone to help that day? I sure hope so! for everyone.

When I worked for a Vet's office we used to limit people to 3 at a time. 4 if it was an exceptional circumstance or someone we knew well. It just made too much of a log jam in the schedule to do more with only one or two vets on staff at any given time, and no allowance for emergencies.

They blocked off the morning for me weeks ago. I'm on my own to get them there, too. I can take the van if I need to, but I think I can fit the carriers all into the car.

Well we survived....except Gumby thinks I tried to kill her. I've been "hearing it" from her since I got home.

Of the 7 I managed to catch - Captain Nemo's "cough" is nothing fixable. Gumby weighed the most of all of them I took in! Dory needs a dental. Margo's elbow is very bad, she OCD grooms it so she got a steroid shot & anti-biotic shot. Once they wear off she's to be started on 'crazy pills'. Twitch isn't as tubby as I thought. They're ordering in a different (and apparently very pricey) eye medication for Molly whose had a weepy eye forever. (lysine, multiple eye meds, nothing has worked for it).

Eden & Ophelia Rose hid on me this AM - so they go next Wed.

And - I got ear meds for Squishy ($17), & thyroid pills for the dog ($30).....my total was still just under $250! That's much better than I expected, by taking them all at once I saved about $10/exam.

That's cheap for so much! Rural vet? Mine would charge around that, too.

What did they think Nemo's cough was? Was there an x-ray done of his chest? If he coughs quite often it can eventually weaken his heart.

So glad to hear you survived that trip. You must be on the "family" plan!!! I'm glad it was so inexpensive. And, besides, a little cattitude, your babies made it!!

Glad to hear the trip- the actual act of getting (most of) them there- was a success! I hope all the meds you took home work for your babies, and I hope they can figure out that cough sometime soon.

Wow Nat, that was fast report! And an impressive turn out!

We used to "box up" the six and take them all in. That was how we decided what our cat limit was, in fact - how many cats and carriers we could fit in the car at one time. (Need to be prepared to manage things in an emergency - well - that was the thinking).

Now that we have a van.... can't really use that as the "limiter" anymore.

I can't believe Gumby's the heaviest! She really is "the Gut" isn't she?

We don't seem to get the same "rural vet" discount you do. I think including the meds and vacs and stuff we would have paid close to 2x what you did. But our bill is always HUGE because we always get blood work done, and that is so expensive! But ever since Tuxie's problem.... we see it as a potential "early warning" system, I guess.

But it's just too much work to take them in all at once, so now we've got them staggered, and do it two at a time.

DH takes one cat to the vet at a time, max.
