How often do you scoop?

I was talking to a gal I work with and she has two cats. I asked her how often she scoops out the litter boxes. She told me once a week.

I have a few more than she has and I scoop twice a day. I save those plastic bags from the grocer and just go to each one, scoop then take out to the trash. It takes me perhaps 10 minutes out of my day.

If I forget to scoop my kitties get mad at me.

Twice a day, first thing in the morning and then right after dinner. I use the plastic grocery bags, too.

But....here's a question. Some states are starting to prohibit plastic grocery bags, I believe. And several stores are now charging for using plastic bags. We have quite a few Trader Joe's reusable bags and are using those for our groceries. It's easier, cheaper, and better for the environment.

So....those of you who are also using reusable bags for groceries, what do you use to scoop litter boxes? I don't want to use plastic bags anymore, but I don't know what to use in their place. Any ideas?

I scoop once a day, but I'm thinking of starting to scoop twice a day. I only have 1 kitty, and when he was little and thus used the little box less often, once a day worked fine. But now that he's an adult I'm starting to find that with scooping once a day there is still an odor, and I hate that.

2 xs but some days it gets done just once in certain areas and more in others. I scoop the in house box often as I can.

I use the bags from cat food for some of it and was using the boxes from freshstep/scoopaway but since changing litter I resort to using plastic bags as I cant keep the big food bags more then a day without wanting to puke from smell. I get the cheap bags from dollar store and then after scooping tie and stick them in a high quality black bag. only one broken bag(from weight) so far. For some reason the animals here eat through the bags no idea why. They left them alone at other houses. So I put them in a trash can but due to weight I put them out day of no can

I would think a paper lunch sack would work if you use the clumping litter.

About a month or so ago the same gal I work with smelled something bad. Turns out her cat peed on her bra so she had to buy a new one.

Thats what you get for not scooping more often!

I scoop once a day - one cat, Larry. Sometimes, if I'm walking by, I'll do it again. I was using the little plastic bags that I would put produce in from the grocery store, then I was also using small paper bags if I had any on hand. I, also, try not to get plastic bags from the grocery store.

Then I broke down and bought some little plastic bags from Petland. They're for people who walk their dogs, and they're biodegradable. But when they're gone, I think I'll just stop in a 99 cent store and buy a bunch of paper lunch bags.

With only one kitty I scoop every other day. I also use the plastic grocery bags and then put in the trash outside. It does save on litter since every time you scoop you are wasting litter. If I had two cats I would scoop every day. Every other day works for me and Autumn.

I scoop twice a day and use plastic bags. I'm hoping to change my litter setup soon though. So that will stop the plastic bag use. (I'm wanting to get one of those smart cat boxes....so you just empty the urine into the toilet and can also flush the poop).

I have 2 cats and also use the plastic grocery bags. I don't have a set scoop routine, and it depends on how "used" they are. One cat is mostly outside. I'd say on average every other day.

Usually only once a day. I like to time it after they wake up and all use the litter box. Maybe it's the foods I'm feeding, or that there's 7 boxes for 7 cats, but there's never very much in the boxes unless they all decide they want to use the same den box.

Occasionally I'll have to skip a day if it's not possible for me get down on the floor (and be able to get back up).
I just reuse plastic bags from the store - we use them in the small waste baskets around the house so I'll just grab one that's half full and use that and if there's any space left I'll dump other ones into it so as to get as much trash as I possibly can into one bag.

Going a week, even with one cat, would be gross. I suppose after a while a person may not smell it or if they were a smoker, couldn't, but eww.

we do it every day. Some rare occasions I have skipped a day, and then others (like if we have guests coming over) I will do it multiple times a day.

The giant box gets scooped once a day. The box that Sybil and the kittens use is 2x a day because they fill it up pretty quick. We use plastic grocery bags as well. There are still enough stores around here that don't charge for them and seem obsessed with giving you one bag per item that when we're running low we just do a bit of shopping there.

I have that problem myself, so made myself a long handled scoop. I took a regular plastic scoop, one that's bent forward a little to hold the cat cookies, and duck-taped it to an old broomstick. I've been using it for about 2 months now, and been kicking myself for not thinking of it sooner.

With four kitties, I scoop at least two times per day. I often will scoop in the morning and in the evening before I start getting ready for bed. But, if I walk by one of the boxes and notice a cat peeing or pooping, I'll scoop it as soon as they're finished. So, when I really stop to think about it, it's usually more than just twice per day. I have 7 boxes and so scooping takes no time at all aside from walking to and from litter pans. I'm OCD about everything and, I suppose, cat litter should be no different. Besides, would I want to use a bathroom that was unclean? Of course not. And, neither should my kitties.

As far as what I use to scoop the litter into, I prefer to use the biodegradable bags I buy to pick up my dogs' waste outside. However, I do also have a stash of plastic grocery bags that I'll use in a pinch. For example, I couldn't find the bags that were biodegradable that I like and so was out for a couple of weeks. And, so I used grocery bags. They're quick, easy, always abundant, and free, but I prefer recycling them. But, if I can reuse them, I will. My only issue with grocery store bags are that they often have holes in them. Even when double bagging, I will notice a small hole where litter is seeping through. That's why I like using the doggy bags -- they're better for the Earth, they are hole-free, and they are the perfect size.

It's just Maia and I scoop once a day.... but if I used clumping litter, I would scoop morning and night. My neighbor has to awesome kitties who unfortunately have one litter box in her bathroom which is opposite my bathroom. To often my bathroom smells like kitty pee
because it comes through the drains........

I thought about that before, but I have two covered boxes - I'd still have to get them open, the litter container that I get a little out of to "refresh" the litter in the box, the waste basket, and the fact that I'm not always so steady with my hands (neck related) and may end up flinging poo since some days I have enough problems holding a fork. It makes for a very entertaining mental image, though... I can see it now -my arm jerks sudden, poo flies out to land in DH computer chair. I look around, shrug, and leave it there since he wasn't kind enough to help me scoop.
I have a very active imagination.

On the days I can't scoop or manage to scoop every box, I'll still check them and get the worst of the boxes.
