SemiFeralKitty seemed a first a sunfaded black.

Then her tail showed faint rings, and a few adult hairs grew in white.

Now there are so many white hairs growing in on her belly, it looks grey. White hairs are also accenting the ring on her tail, and faint tabby stripes are appearing on her hind legs. At the roots, there's a lot of white among her black baby fluff. Not sure if this is growing in as full-length white, or is base of hairs that are dark at the ends.

My understanding is that smoke is a grey undercoat with black tips. White hairs on a black cat is normal, as is being able to see strips and rings on the tail.

Smoke is silver which means the hairs look pure white from the roots and the tips can be any solid color. Most common is black smoke.
Few bad pics:

Hmmmm... some of what you're describing seems like it could also be considered a "fever coat."

Pictures would help.

Thanks for all the pics and input. Wow, Lil' Jag is gorgeous!

Will post pics as soon as I can get some. Lately, SFK acts like she's found a stash of cocaine somewhere and is doing lines under the wardrobe.

Strange that I still have zero need to name her. Kittens are soooo not my thing.

Doesn't look like a smoke to me. I'd say solid black. I'm not too familiar with the 'fever coat' though, so it could be an option if she has some gray/white looking hairs mixed in there?

Really Wellington?! That sounds lovely! Which is not a word I could use to describe her current coat. (I don't know what fever coat is.)

She even has a partial skunk stripe going on ...

@ Mimosa, she's been w me for ca 38 days. When she came, her upper molars were already in, which to me says she was ca. 8 weeks old at the time. The white has only shown up since then. So what have I done wrong that she has fever coat?!
