My cats eat from porcelain bowls. Muffin emptied his of the dry food he eats. Mattie emptied hers of the wet food, except for a little residue in the bowl. I turned his bowl on top of hers and was sitting on the porch with them. I had to come inside for a minute and while I was gone, Muffin pushed both bowls onto the floor. His broke. Hers was licked clean. I am concerned about the shards of glass that were on the floor and him eating the rest of what was in Mattie's bowl. I called the Emergency clinic. They consulted the vet and told me to feed him some more of the wet food, to try to push everything on out. I also gave him a little bit of the laxatone hairball med. Then they told me watch him carefully for several days and check his gums to make sure they are still pink. Please say prayers that Muffin didn't swallow any glass and that he will be fine. Thanks

Oh, many prayers - how scary - and now I'm going out this evening after work to buy steel bowls for my babies. I'd never thought of that happening, but I can see how it easily could.

O my goodness. Of course I am sending up prayers and vibes for Muffin. Have you looked around his mouth? I would think there would be a bit of blood from a shard if he indeed did swallow some.

It sounds like you did all the right things. Please keep us posted.

Thanks everyone for the Muffin prayers. Yes, Farleyv, the people at the Emer. clinic told me look in his mouth. I did do that and saw no sign of any blood in his mouth. He seems to be fine this morning. I just saw him in the litter box outside. So far, so good. Keep up the prayers. They told me pay him close attention for several days.

Thank you all for your prayers. So far, so good. I went to the sporting goods store today and bought stainless steel bowls for food and water. This won't happen again.

Sending lots of good vibes along for Muffin. Zimmie has a glass water dish, so now am thinking I should replace it.

One time back in the day two of my cats were given access to wander my parents' house. They had a library room where rats had invaded and made use of the clutter. Well I didn't realize that someone had put out a plate of rat poison pellets.

So when both of my cats disappeared from the main area of the house I went searching .. and found them both in the library room standing right over the plate of poison. It absolutely freaked me out. Cats tend to lick their mouth at times anyways but it is not a good time to be licking their mouths when they are in the presence of poison. It leads one to think the worst. \t

I could not tell if they had eaten any poison or not but they sure did gravitate to the smell. Once I got them back to their "cat room" I checked their mouths, found no trace evidence of anything green [the pellets were green] so I had to do a taste test. I held a pellet near them to see if they wanted it, such as a treat, having NO intentions of actually giving it to them mind you. And both of them wanted it.

So that did not ease my worried mind at all. I was hoping to see no interest coming from them so the chance of them having feasted prior to my arrival would at least in my mind be more minimal.

Being unable to afford vet care at the time [I was just a teen and had two parents that did not "believe" in "blowing money" on pet medical crises .. or pet-anything aside from food] I went to a pharmacist to find out what could counteract the potential poison. I do not remember now what specific vitamin was recommended, nor would I ever recommend anyone treat their cat at home for such a scenario, I did some quick research at the time on what the pharmacist recommended (that deadly library room did have a bunch of medical books in it .. go figure). The counteractive vitamin dose very well could have killed my cats had I given it to them unnecessarily [had there been no actual rat poison in their system].

Sooo long story short, I opted to keep a close eye on my kitties and remained ever so vigilant over the course of the next few days. They never got sick. But boy did I dodge two deadly bullets and a heart attack.

The moral of this story is:

1. Try to know your surroundings and possible accidents-in-waiting as best as possible where cats reside (because if trouble lurks, a cat will almost always find a way to get into it).

2. If in doubt always take kitties to a vet when a potential deadly scenario has occurred. Peace of mind is priceless.

3. Try not to land yourself in jail when someone tells you it's "just a cat".

4. Anyone reading this post please please please make sure all poisonous products are completely out of reach and inaccessible to your cats. All it takes is one simple mistake to become a lifetime of regret.

As for the ceramic bowls .. accidents happen. Sometimes I think our cats do these things on purpose just to keep us on our toes
And your story will make me think twice before I buy a cute ceramic bowl at the pet store. Knowing my cats they will make sure to turn it into a hazardous object.

It's Vitamin K. However most cats will not survive ingesting rat poison, and certainly not without blood transfusions and other emergency medical treatment.

Rat poison works by not letting the blood clot. They bleed to death, from the inside. It's terrible stuff. For cats and dogs and rats and mice.

You were on the ball and found them in time.

So glad to hear Muffin is doing okay. The things they do to age us, my goodness.

You know those studies that say that having pets prolong your life, and relax you? ......Sometimes I wonder.

This incident happened in the mid 1990s. One of the cats involved, Sammy, is still with me now at the age of 18 years old. To think back on that close call and imagine her not being by my side all these years .. it makes me very grateful that I am so protective of my cats. Life lessons teach us along the way. This was definitely one of them.

Vitamin K! Thanks for the info. I do not allow rat poison to even be in my home these days. Dangerous stuff with, as you stated, a more than likely fatal outcome.

I don't even have the heart to put a rat through such a violent demise \t

I am posting an update on Muffin. It has been three days now since this happened. He is his usual self so I think he is fine. I am glad I went ahead and replaced all the bowls with stainless ones. Thanks for the prayers for him.
