I aged 10 years in 2 seconds!

Stinkpot was being his usual mischievous self and was up on the upstairs bannister yesterday, when he decided to go over and try to land on a potshelf on the otherside. (18 foot drop to the tile floor below). We have all kinds of plants and pottery on that shelf, so when he dove off the bannister, he hit a potted plant, which I guess scared him, and he made a 180 degree turn off the shelf (now about 12 feet up) and then ended up landing about halfway up the stairs. Scared the you know what out of me!!! The entire time I was standing in the kitchen with my hand over my mouth just frozen in place.

He appears to be in perfect condition, thank goodness! He's running around like nothing happened, although immediately afterwards he ran back upstairs (since he was facing that direction anyway) and hid under the futon in the office for a few minutes.

I hope this taught him a lesson, although I'm not counting on it.

Holy moly! When you mentioned, "18 foot drop to the tile floor below" my own heart started thumping; I can only imagine how you felt watching that whole thing!

Crazy cats!!

That's scary! I lost a kitten b/c he fell off of the second floor landing and landed just right on the handle of the vacuum and broke his back. I'm glad your kitten is okay!

I'm so glad he's ok! Yeah, I probably would have had a heart attack no doubt.

We live in a three story townhome with 12 foot ceilings. Given a foot clearance between floors, that would mean a 26 foot drop from the third floor to the first floor. We have an elevator which is round, but the floors are cut in a square, meaning it is possible for one of my cats to fall 26 feet to the first floor since they both love laying on the third floor and watching for anybody that might be coming in on the first floor. My original plan was to immediately put up a screen but DW said cats are not stupid. Both cats hang over the ledge that could result in a serious if not fatal fall, watching for any body that might come in. We also have balconies on the 2nd and 3rd floors that either cat could call to its death on the cement below. Yet both cats spend a lot of time on the balconies and perched over the elevator shaft. My wife keeps telling me cats are not stupid. I worried and fretted about this many times on TCS but finally just decided to let them do what they wanted. I still have fears of them falling. For instance, on the third floor balcony there is a hornet's nest under the roof. When Persi and I are sitting out on the balcony, every time a hornet appears, Persi will jump up three or four feet into the air to try and catch it. The rail is four feet tall so I do not worry about it. But your post has resurrected an old fear of mine; I know they are not stupid and would not jump to their death, but accidents happen. I need to rethink this once again.

I worry constantly about Queen Eva taking a dive or drop as she tries to keep up with the big cats. I live on the second floor with an open (inside) stairwell to the downstairs entry and utility room.

Queen Eva is so clumsy, and I'm so afraid she is going to go flying off the half wall that goes around the stairwell.

I sure hope she gets more graceful soon, or at least when she gets fully grown.
