My best friend's daughter found an orphaned kitten outside and since yesterday they have been trying to nurse it. It is skin and bones. It is probably about 2 weeks old if that. It seemed to be doing better last nite but this morning it is having seizures it seems. Can this kitten be saved still or is it too late? We are going to try Karo and pedialyte and I have an old sock filled with rice warmed with it now. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Can't get to the vet until tomorrow. My vet just says to call the ER vet in another town, an hour away, I'd rather take her to her in the
AM. She is wonderful.

This try you are doing now is as good as any... Warm, comfort is also essential. Although I wonder a little, if YOU are going to try with this, so what did your friends?

Do you have kmr -milk? kmr is replacement milk for kittens - there are many brands of it, although the KMR-brand is the best.

ps, I see you are in Palestine. So perhaps you dont have a lot of KMR-milk, but you surely do have goats there? Hurray for goats. Excellent milk for people, and a very decent replacement milk for small kittens!
ps 2. Or it is perhaps a town Palestine in Texas?? Anyway, goat milk is still useful, Either from a living goat, or bought in your nearby supermarket...

A good site useful for found kittens is www.kitten-rescue.com/

Good luck!

I fear the seizures are a sign it is too late for this precious baby. Sadly there isn't much an ER vet or any vet can do when it comes to a 2 week old baby. I am saying a prayer that this baby pulls through, but if not that this kitten goes knowing that someone cared about it and loved it.

Thanks for the replies. My best friend just brought her to me since she has school during the week and she felt like she wasn't doing enough. I think the kitten is twitching not seizing. She has been getting KMR by Hartz since yesterday morning about every half hour, just a tiny bit. It's not sucking on the bottle itself. She was just putting it slowly drop by drop sorta in it's cheek and let it swallow it then that way, so it didn't aspirate on it. I think it got too cold last nite, her daughter took the kitten to her room and I don't think it was warm enough. I have it with a rice sock now and put Karo on it's gums and a then gave it a drop or two of karo with pedialyte and a bit of formula. She seems to have improved and she pooped and peed. It's ears are standing up and one eye is open but one is swollen shut. They think since it was covered with ants when they found it that may be why it's swollen. Her daughter found this little baby under one of their neighbor's trailer's. Their were two kittens and one was dead when they found it. Raven, (my bff's daughter), gave this one milk a day before they found the dead one. She probably kept it from dying by doing that. They couldn't find the mom anywhere. When the other one died they decided to tell their mom and my bff said she really thought the kitten was dead when she brought it to her. It seemed to improve though yesterday, but I think they let it get too cold last nite. If it makes it through tonite I will take it to my vet in the morning.

She seems like she is doing better already! I really think the Karo syrup helped alot! I am calling her a her because it is a little dilute calico it looks like. She is really gonna be a cutie if she makes it. She has gone to the bathroom today too.

I'm scared to go to sleep! She has been mostly sleeping today, not crying much at all except for maybe once and fed her and she was fine. Will take her to the vet in the AM. So far so good, I really want her to make it because my friend's little girl is so worried about it and I can't believe it's made it this far!

As it is in this moment it seems it is as good it can be for now. The crisis is over for this time.

Of course, all dangers are not over, she may have catched pneumonia or almost anything....

But as they say: "the day, the sorrow". You cant guard against everything.

Jolly well done!

Good luck!

She's definitely not out of the woods yet, not by a long shot, but you are doing good by her. The twitching could be from the ant bites- depending on what type of ants they are. if you have toxic ants, the little one could be fighting the poison. For her swollen eye, apply a gentle compress of warm water- just soak a bandage or gauze and gently...gently...gently press it on her swollen eye for just about five minutes. Release, take a cotton ball warmed with water and gently wipe around the outside of her eye, but don't force the eye open. It will open in time- the water helps to unstick things.

Keeping her warm is paramount- watch the pedialyte though- the minerals might be a bit rough for her because she is so health-compromised.

She made it through the nite. She seems ok, no crying. I'm trying to get through to my vets office and the line is busy, ugh! She seems to be eating better. She's not good at sucking on the bottle though so it's drop by drop. Well off to call again!

Nothing wrong with drop by drop, even if it takes time. Although there are easier ways than bottle.
Some prefer to use a "pipette". I suspect it is written up in this www.kitten-rescue.com (made by Hissy who did come with those excellent advices above)

Good luck!

She seems to be doing better! Now if I can just get this feeding thing down better! Her eyes are both shut now, but I did the compress thing, thanks for all the advice! I need a better bottle I think that's easier for her to use. Anyone got any suggestions on that? This is a Hartz bottle.

Can't get her to the vet until tomorrow morning, that's the earliest they would see her. They are super busy. I went and got some KMR brand formula since I only have one more can of the Hartz stuff and some different bottles, so we shall see. She weighed 5.7 oz yesterday afternoon, today she weighs 5.9 oz I guess, she wouldn't be still this time. Guess that's a good sign. Both her eyes are shut now though. Did the warm compress, doing it everytime I feed her now. She doesn't cry to eat, so I've been giving her a little every 3 hrs. She seems more enthused about it now though. My grandma who has alzheimer's has been having CHF lately and today though got to hold the kitten to warm it and she is just in love, so if the kitten lives, I don't think she will be going anywhere.

No I'm selfish to do this, it's theraputic instead of just worrying about my grandma all the time and it is helping her have a reason to want to get better so she can "help." Plus I can't have children of my own so this is my guilty pleasure of a "baby." Let me see if I can add a pic. Only have one my bff took not the greatest.

Thanks all, no name yet, want to see how she does first. She was pretty lively today, so hoping hoping, but she didn't poop, she did yesterday though. Going to the vet in the AM. May have to take my grandma to the Dr again also, she is not losing the fluid even after upping her Lasix, so worried about her too. I want them both to do good so they can enjoy each other, my grandma is sooooo sweet, she loves animals and had a fit over this kitten.

her not crying is worrying me. How often are you feeding her and is she actually eating? Is she fussy afterwards? Does she become restless, or does she just lie there? With both of her eyes closed now where one was opened before could become a health issue. Feline herpes kitties have this problem, so do kittens with chlymidia and another malady called Feline Microplasma. Is there any discharge from the eyes- and if you hold the palm of your hand over the eye (just about 1/4 inch away) do you feel heat rising up from the eye to your palm?

I took her to the vet this morning, and she is staying there for a few hours for some fluids, tube feeding, and eye treatment. The vet is going to do this without charging me and I didn't even ask her to, she is sooooo wonderful!
She said she is older than I think because she has teeth coming in. She is going to put her on antibiotic treatment for her eyes. The kitten has been crying today some and more feisty. She's a tough little booger to have made it this far! My husband's grandmother passed away this morning so that makes me want to save the kitten even MORE now, she loved animals.
