Hello! My cat Peanut has the funniest tail - she normally holds it straight up and curled around like a pig's tail. She has done this since I brought her home almost 3 years ago. Whenever she is up and around, and even if she's just sitting, her tail is curled up and around in a circle.

In the last few days I've noticed a change. The curl is gone. She holds the base of her tail up, but the rest of it now falls backwards, making it look like a somewhat collapsed arch. I have felt her tail and found nothing wrong - no bumps, loss of hair, soreness that she reacts to, nothing. Her behavior is normal (for her), no loss of appetite, she runs around and plays with the other cats. What could be wrong with her???

The only thing that's changed (a big change at that) is that I moved to a much smaller place, on my own. I have all 8 of my furry babies with me, and I'm home pretty often. They all seem to be adjusting to their new surroundings pretty well, we've been here about 3 weeks.

Could the move have affected her tail posture? What else could be going on? I miss her funny piggy tail!!

Well, darn.......had a post all typed out for you and stupid explorer choked on it.

Anyways, if the tail is normally mobile, she is fine, if not, a vet visit is in order. Cats with curled tails WILL lose the curl if upset, even if they eat and otherwise act normally. My two ring tail boys lost their curls when I had to hire help for a few months when I wrecked my back. It took weeks for them to realise the help was not going to hurt them and actually liked cats. Both cats acted normally, played, ate, and the one that is a pest was still a pest but no curl to his tail (his actually lies flat on his back and curls over his left flank). Then came the day when the help asked what's wrong with Streak's tail and I looked, said nothing is wrong, it is normal now. She asked if it was normal for the tail to be curled and I said yes, the happier the cat, the tighter the curl and when it is flat on his back, he is positively delighted or at least very relaxed. She is fascinated by those curled tails. So, if the tail moves normally as a balancing aid etc, give her time and if she isn't using it, have her checked out.
