I treated my cats today with Advantage for the first time. They did NOT hold still for me (of course) and I seem to have made quite a mess of the back of their necks! I wonder does anyone know if they lick it off of eachother will they get sick? They both seem a bit under the weather! I hope I haven't poisoned them! And also, how long does it take before it begins to kill the fleas?
Thanks in advance!

Amy I will move this to the health forum for you.

How old are your cats? If they are kittens and under 9 weeks old and you treated them, then you need to give them a bath and take the stuff off.

What do you mean under the weather? How are they acting?

They are a year old. They just seem to be sleeping the day away. I may be just worrying over nothing because they sleep a lot, but I can smell that stuff when I get close to them and I can't help but wonder if they're not smelling it too and getting nauseous!

Are they drooling? Are they eating? Is it hot where you are? It's 95 degrees here and my whole crew is sound asleep wiped out from the heat. Are they itching where you put the stuff? If they have scratched their necks, you can take some dawn dishwashing soap and stick in in the sink with some warm water, and put their paws in it. Give them a paw bath, to get the majority of the medicine off their paws.

nope, not drooling. but not eating too much either. Maybe I will go ahead and give them a "paw bath". Thanks for the help!

I live deep-in-da-heart-of flea country and used Advantage for the first time last year. The fleas started dieing within about 15 minutes. I only had to use it twice last summer (along with a powder in the rugs) and I haven't seen more than a single flea yet this year (I crushed it to death). My worst summer, I had so many fleas in the house that I couldn't walk across the living room carpet without picking up 8 or 10 on my legs. Of course I lost my 15 year old dog in January (from a stroke) so there isn't anyone left to bring the buggers in the house.

My vet's advice when applying it to cats is to separate the cat you treated for about 12 hours, and preferably up to 24 hours. If your cats groom each other, they can lick it off each other and poison themselves. After 24 hours, it works into their systems and is off their skin.
