The Flea Problem

Thread Starter
I am just wondering how you manage your cat's fleas out there. Please answer these 4 questions.

When are fleas a problem?

Have you ever had fleas infest your home? If so, what did they do?

What methods do you use to control fleas?

What other insects cause problems for your cats?

Thanks,
Eileen
P.S.
Here are my answers.
1. Usually never for my cat.
2. Never had them infest my home.
3. I use a flea collar on my cat.
4. Ear mites are probably the biggest problem with my cat.

1) When the cats get them. For the first time in living in this house for nearly two years I finally have fleas - suspected that they hitchhiked home from the vet clinic waiting room since I've been in there as much as 3 to 4 times a week.

2) Not this house or the last house I lived in. They got bad at my childhood home one summer. Unrelated to pets as the entire block had a serious infestation of them including non pet owners. We used flea foggers finally as a last resort. Oddly the pets were attacked less by the fleas than we were.

3) When they show up I usually use Advantage, but will switch off to Revolution occasionally. Treat for 2-3 months and super clean the house. (just spent the entire day vacuuming every corner of the house) I use DE for the outdoor cats' shelters.

4) ..The ones they can't catch? No mite issues. Once treated in a new cat they're gone. (mites are not insects, btw, they're arachnids just like spiders and ticks are)

Flea collars are not safe to put on animals, nor are they safe to regularly handle (read the label warning not to let children handle them - that spreads all over you pet and into you each time you touch them). Save collars for putting in the vacuum cleaner for when you're vacuuming. Avoid other OTC flea products like bio-spot, hartz, zodiac, etc, and sprays, powders, and shampoos. Advantage and Frontline, though OTC now, have been out since '96 and are fine. If buying in stores or online, carefully check the packaging and call the manufacturer to insure that it isn't counterfeit.

I cannot answer any of these questions, since i have been living in Kelowna the last 13 years,i have NEVER had any fleas on the dogs or cats.I can only chalk it up to the enviroment,it gets very hot here in summer.

1. The last time we had fleas was 3 years ago. When Dooku and Edea were given to me they had fleas.

2. Never had an investation.

3. When Dooku and Edea brought fleas into the home I used Frontline Plus on everyone. When I adopted Zelda I went ahead and got Advantage Multi for everyone, just in case. The vet said that fleas are starting to become resistant to Frontline.

4. Zelda had earmites when I adopted her, the Advantage Multi resolved that. Haven't had a problem since.

When are fleas a problem?
In this part of the world, they start in early spring and last until the first freeze in the fall.

Have you ever had fleas infest your home? If so, what did they do?
We had 1 really bad year with fleas and they mostly got into our carpet. That was the year that I found food grade DE and was able to eliminate them in a couple of days.

What methods do you use to control fleas?
When I control them on our dogs (using Frontline Plus) who go in and out, I usually don't need to treat the cats. During bad flea years, I'll use Advantage on the cats.

What other insects cause problems for your cats?
Occasionally we have issues with tape worms, but when I control the fleas, I control the tapes.

Please lose the flea collar. Many cats can get seriously ill when using them and there have been cases where cats have died from them. The best use for flea collars is to cut them up and place them in your vacuum cleaner.

I am no longer using a flea collar. It was for a very short time last year, but as he doesn't have really any fleas, we haven't had a use for it. Thanks for telling me that they can kill cats

When are fleas a problem?
In northeastern Ohio, I would say that fleas are an issue from March through November. This year has been a terrible year as far as fleas are concerned due to the extended periods of unusually warm weather (90+) and the fact that it's been so dry. I begin using spot-on flea medication for my dogs and cats in the beginning of March and then use them through November. Sometimes, if the weather is warm in December or February, I will start then. But, so far, this methodology has worked well for us.

Have you ever had fleas infest your home? If so, what did they do?
I had a flea infestation only once. And, it was terrible. When my grandmother passed away (4 years ago this past August), I had to travel back to New Jersey for her funeral. And, since my dog was under a year old at the time, I decided to bring her with me (a friend sat with the kitties). And, while I stayed with my father in northeast Pennsylvania, he failed to mention that he had stopped treating his pets and that he had a full-blown infestation at the time. And, since my dog was still young, I had not started her on monthly protection (for health reasons -- per my vet). And, by the time we got home, she, too, was crawling with fleas. I immediately went into action and bathed her with dawn detergent and used a flea comb. I also put her on spot-on treatment. But, the damage was done. I had to vaccuum my apartment 2-3 times per day and did laundry as soon as there was a load to be done. I did everything and then some, but they were difficult to manage and both myself and my puppy were constantly being bitten. And, aside from the physical aspect, it definitely took a toll on me emotionally and financially as well. It took 3 months for me to get the infestation under control and it's an experience I hope to never have again. It was terrible!

What methods do you use to control fleas?
I currently use Revolution on my cats and dogs. And, as stated earlier, I use the meds on them from March through November. The dogs do get heartworm prevention during the winter months, but I do not use the Revolution at that time. I also vaccuum frequently and wash linens, clothes, and pet beds regularly. Neither my roommate or I wear our shoes in the house and we change if need be as we know fleas can travel in on us. I work in a vet clinic and I change before even coming in the house since I often come in contact with fleas and other parasites. It takes vigilance, but it is worth it to prevent infestations in the home.

What other insects cause problems for your cats?
No other insects or parasites are trouble-causing. Of course, I schedule fecal exams and de-wormings throughout the year as well as comprehensive exams to ensure that they are healthy, but Revolution does help in that department as well. As with any home, we have insects that get in, but keeping the home tidy, free of clutter, and clean helps reduce the risk of insect infestations and we have thankfully not had issues with any pests in a number of years.

1) fleas are a problem for us june-octoberish. we used frontline plus until this year when it appeared to stop working.

2) yes we've had fleas a few times, usually get them when we bring in a foster. Strangely enough my husband and 4 year old are the only ones bitten. We tried foggerd (didn't work) we tried carpet spray from wal-mart(worked once than stopped) and we ordered a good carpet spray online and can't recall the name(this worked great) last infestation all we did was sprinkle salt on the floor, let it sit for a week and then vaccumed and all the fleas are apparently gone. plus we now treat dog and cat with revolution.

3) right now both dog and cat are treated with revolution and it's working great. we also plan on treating our yard next season.

4)we have ticks too but thats more a problem for the dog and my husband.
