Ok, so now I am worried. I was told in Lucy's spay thread that metacam can cause kidney failure. I was looking at the boy's receipt from their neuter, and that is what they were given. Is it something that can cause problems over time? Or is it something with more immediate effects? If anyone has links they can share, it would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Metacam has it's place. It's a very good non steroidal anti-inflammatory. Provided that the cat it is being used in is healthy or at least being regularly monitored and doesn't have liver problems, a few doses are perfectly fine. It's not something that should be used regularly, ever, though.

If you're truly concerned, chat with your vet. Tell them your concerns about the drug. They should be able to calm your fears and take note that you only want this used judiciously and that you want to be informed before it's used.

(no links, sorry. IMO your vet is better for this than looking online)

Sounds like a good idea. It was just used the once after their neuter since it is long lasting. It just scared me after seeing that it was advised against. Good to know that it is just not good for frequent use

I wrote in that other thread Metacam is an excellent anti-inflammatory and pain killer, but can have very serious side effects if used orally over a long period. Used once (usually in injectable form) as a post=operative measure, it is used by most vets. I get angry when vets who are used to giving it to dogs (for whom it is fine) prescribe it in tablets for cats on the basis that the cat form of it is a smaller dosage and an easy option. I am quite sure that it will have done your cat no harm at all and I am sorry if my post caused you worry. But it is good to be aware of what regularly prescribed medicines can do - I always do a search to see what the latest research is on any product I don't recognise.
Ask your vet if you are still worried.
