Now what???

I never butt into my neighbors' business--never say never.
For the past 2 1/2 hours my neighbor's cat, across the hall, has been crying and scratching the door from inside her apartment. I'm concerned. Her car is gone. I haven't seen or heard her for a while now, but I thought that we were just on different work schedule. Since I work 10-11 hours a day I usually don't see any of my neighbors, but I know they're around.
I'm still babysitting Turtle and she been staring at the door. I knocked, but there's no response. I feel like something's wrong, you guys.
I called the landlord and asked him if he would come by and go inside the apartment to see if everything is OK. It's barely 4:00 am and he's on his way. I'm been going to the door and talking to the baby--I'm sure that looks crazy, but I want her to know someone's coming.
I'll have to get back to you all after the landlord leaves.

MY NEIGHBOR MOVED OUT AND ABANDONED HER CAT!!!!!
I'm livid!!! My blood is boiling!!!!!!
The landlord came over and got inside her apartment. The cat ran and hid in the closet. There was NO food NO water AND NO litterbox!!! What the HELL??????
He let me go into the apartment and try to coax the baby out of the closet. I did. She is matted and dehydrated. Her coat is dull and shabby and her eyes are dull.
I am beyond angry with this "person"--how long has this cat been alone?? If anybody could end a relationship with a cat in this manner; then how did she treat the poor creature while she was with it????
While I've been across the hall, grieving for my Bella--this little thing was grieving too!! I'm sure!!
My day off is now planned out--off to the vet we go. The landlord is going to call the "person's" mother and see what is going on...The "owner" is barely 20 years old and mom had to co-sign before she old move in.
I don't even care about ANY of that.
I'm obviously NOT giving the cat up right now....to anybody...is there any legal action I can take???
I don't even know if this little girl has a name.

Surely the landlord can contact the authorities!! is wrong with people? At least let the cat out so she has a chance to find a person or find food. That's so sad. The poor kitty. I'm so glad you heard her.

Turtle is staying until Thursday. She is so active and funny. She has been working extra hard to make me laugh and not dwell on Bella's passing. She's a sweetie.

Oh my gosh, I cannot believe that someone could do that, how disgusting, good job you were there hun. This has made my blood boil, I hope the vet gives her the all clear. Keep us updated.xx

Before I got to end of the thread, this thought occurred to me: Bella sent this kitty to you (or you to this kitty). I guess mbjerkness, Kailee, otto, and Ruthyb feel the same. Is there no way you can keep her?

I appreciate EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU FOLKS!!!! You have given me the strength to go on when I didn't want to face these days without my Bella.
The baby will have to stay at the kitty hospital for a couple of days. She's sedated and getting IV fluids. Her electrolytes are very messed up. The vet determined that she about 12-15 years old. Her advanced age makes all of this more serious.l
I just came home to check on Turtle. I'm headed back to sit with the little kitty. I want to at least try to let her know she isn't alone any more and that I love her. What you all said about Bella having something to do with this made me smile. I had no desire to get another cat this soon--guess I don't get a say in the matter
The landlord has said he is going to take legal action. He recommends that I stay out of it. He is going to file charges against her for the condition of the apartment AND neglect of an animal. I'll stay out of that part of the situation, but won't stay out of this little baby's life. I'm very glad he is a cat lover!!!
I'm also blessed to have had the same vet for over 20 years!!!
Thank you all so much. I will post more news later.
Of, I have named/renamed her Genesis.....

Bless you for both your actions regarding this cat and taking her in. Thank goodness you got her in time. I cannot imagine what kind person your former neighbor is, to leave an animal to starve. She should be arrested. I sure this cat will be a blessing to you, too. I had found a starving stray kitten with a broken leg just days after my beloved dog died. The new kitten helped ease my pain. Your kindness is certainly a wonderful tribute to Bella.

Aww, Genesis, that is beautiful and no you do not have a say in this matter Bella wants to try and heal your heart a little.xx

I don't know how people can be so despicable, I will never understand it. I am crying and cheering at the same time. The agony this baby must have been through breaks my heart. THANK GOD you heard her and KNEW that something was wrong. Thank you so much for helping her! Your little Bella is at work for sure. I am praying that Genesis pulls through this with no problems...

I told Genesis, before I left her for the night, that we all (everyone here at TCS) loved her now and that she was going to be OK. So please continue with your prayers and vibes. She's still in the hospital. Her prognosis is Poor. Her bloodwork is terrible. I don't need to see a miracle at her expense--I just want her out of this pain.

for genesis.

Bless you for being this kitty's angel and very very bad vibes for the evil former "owner." Many many many positive vibes that Genesis pulls through and gets to live the rest of her years in peace and luxury

A poor prognosis, but if "Genny" has something and someONE to live for (y-o-u) that could make all the difference in the world.

As for the irresponsible little who abandonned her:

Even though her prognosis is poor, I'm sure her comfort level much improved. She has nourishment now, and love.

What a disgusting excuse for a human being that girl is! Absolutely shocking what some people do with animals! Good for your landlord for pressing charges - I hope no one ever rents her an apartment or lets her so much as LOOK at an animal again!
Okay, now that my outrage has been slightly spent, I am sending Genesis and and I just wanted to tell you that I am so glad you stuck your nose into this business - the world needs more people like you!!

What was a 19 year old doing with a cat who is 12-15 years old? Was this her childhood cat? Is the young woman mentally disturbed? On drugs? I guess we may never know.

Still praying hard for Genesis that her outcome is whatever will be best for her. Cheryl, you saved her much suffering, even if she doesn't make it, though I do hope she does, so she can know the kind of life she deserves.

Could the vet give an estimate how long she was without food and water? My heart breaks every time I return to this thread and then I try to force myself to remember that Genesis is safe now, and under treatment, not alone and suffering any longer.

Thank God for you. I can't say it enough.

The vet said she may have gone a least 6 days without food and water. That's just an estimation on their part. I don't know what she was doing with this baby. Maybe it was a childhood kitty. But, my Gosh, she would have grown up with this cat--why wouldn't she treat her like the treasure that she is???
I'm on my way to see her now. If she isn't better...I want her find peace and love and if that means helping her cross the Bridge...I don't know...
Oh hun, I know that you'll do what is best for Genesis. I love her name by the way... I hope beyond hope that her previous owner gets a just punishment, but in my opinion, just punishment is to let HER go without food and water for 6 days and then see how SHE feels.

Sending a ton of vibes for the sweet girl!

I read an article about a real estate agent that was finding many abandoned animals in homes that had been foreclosed. She found a glass of murky water in a sink full of dirty dishes. She started to dump it out, then saw a goldfish inside. This kind woman started doing rescues for abdandoned animals. She fixed the goldfish up in a nice clean water and took him home for a pet. I won't go into great detail, but something happen in our own town upset me very much. A businessman had two dogs that he kept in his office. One day, he left them in the office and never came back. I think his business wasn't doing well, but that's no excuse. Better to be PTS even that left to starve. By the accounts from neighboring business owners, he "loved" those dogs and took them for walks, etc. The story does not end well. I hope this man thinks about what he did for the rest of his life.
