Hajimemashite!

Hello, all! I am an American, living in Tokyo with my Japanese husband for the past 2.5 years now. I really love it here in Tokyo, but sadly, I couldn't bring my cats with me when I moved. Fortunately, my mom agreed to let them live with her until we could find an apartment that allowed pets (not an easy feat in Tokyo ). Well, we have FINALLY gotten an apartment that kindly allows pets, and we have finished all the rigmarole required by the Japanese government to allow our kitties in! I am flying to the US to bring them back with me next week, and I am so happy!
My screen name, Nekoha, is Japanese for cat person, and I am 100% that! I have always had cats, so the past 2.5 years have been really difficult - not just for my furbabies, but for me, too!
We have two cats: Piccalo is 8, and a sweeter cat you cannot find. She is black and a little white, and probably has some Maine Coon in her somewhere... she is quite a large girl - but NOT FAT! Her story isn't completely known, but she lived at a vet's office for about 2 years before I adopted her. In that two years, she was temporarily adopted by no less than 8 people. No one wanted to take her on permanently, as it was apparent that she had had some really bad experiences before being rescued and brought to the vet's office. Honestly, it took her about 2 years to warm up to me (I cried the day she finally let me hold her on my lap!) and she still is lukewarm towards my husband (she hates most men, so that is saying something!).
Pounce is 6 years old, and definitely part LOUD! She knows how to use her vocal cords to get what she wants, anytime, anywhere! She also knows that she is 100% cute, and poses all the time. She was born in the same vet's office that Piccalo was living in, and for some reason she really bonded with Piccalo. I adopted both cats when Piccalo was about 2.5 and Pounce was 6 months old, and everyone thinks they are mom and daughter! Pounce is also black with some white, but she is a dainty little thing, maybe some Siamese in there...
Well, enough about me and mine for now. I look forward to finding out about everyone else! Also, I am going to post somewhere asking for advice about the plane trip from the US to Tokyo, so if anyone has any suggestions and especially if you have experience with air travel, please find that post!!
Thanks!!

Konnichiwa! Onamae wa nan desu ka? Neko ga suki desu. ;] Yep, I speak Japanese. Never have been to Japan though, it's good to have members from all over the world. Anyway, I love cats and can tell that you do too. I better get onto the original speech, I forgot it when I saw the thread title. I just knew I had to come in and say something. If you ever want to chat in Japanese or such, just feel free to drop me a line.

Welcome to TCS, I know that you and your kitties will love it here. It's great to see a member from another part of the world. You do know that we'll be needing pictures right? ;] Here at TCS, we are all cat crazy so feel free to share your kitty moments, dramas, problems or questions. If you need any help with anything around the forum, send me a PM (Private Message) on my Profile. I just know that you'll love it here, I certainly do.

Hoping to see you around the forums,
Jackz, Jazzy & Ginga.

Wish i had some help to offer on the kitty plane ride, but I got Aya here so I don't really know anything. Might be interested in your experiences though as I maybe doing the trip in reverse in the next coup[le of years.

Good to hear you'll be getting your kitties home with you soon! While back in the US you might consider picking up a few cat items that cannot be purchased in Japan. Lyrajean ran into that a few months ago when she needed some Cat Attract additive.

Yeah that, I have not found Cat attract and Feliway here and we ahve access to a lot of US type goods on Okinawa. There's lots of good litter options, but the brands are all different so you might want to bring a bag with you (I know its heavy!) to transition the furkids.

Thanks! I have been spending a lot of time browsing pet shops, pet catalogs, online stores, etc. I also have been talking with my mom about all the supplies we use in the US now. So far, I can get everything except US-type litter here in Tokyo. I like the idea of bringing some litter to transition them... we use FelinePine, so it is pretty light.

There are some pine brands here, but the one my friend tried was more of 'had a strong piney odor' than a natural litter. It was disgusting. There are some paper pellet types that might be most similar to their current litter, and the usual assortment of clumping and clay types. Many have strong perfume scents so be sure to have your husband help you sort those out if you don't read enough Japanese to do so yourself. Litter costs more here, so it can be a 700 yen mistake!

I like Lion litter (clumping, non-scented). It's rather expensive but easy to spot with the cat holding its nose on the front of the yellow bag. They have some nasty scented versions too though. I mix 50/50 with a cheaper more clay-like type (Dream Sand). The lion keeps down the odor esp. in the hot summers and it still clumps okay. I think Aya prefers the more sandy feel of the Dream Sand. I'm also not sure of the chemical components used in the Lion litter and its more than twice the price of Dream sand. Best of both worlds!

I bought one bag of litter to try already. I chose it because I have the option of flushing it, and it can be put in the "burnable" waste. I have no clue what the name is... I do know it is made from soybean shells... supposed to have odor-eliminating properties, and no chemicals or perfumes. I HATE the perfumed-type litter! The type I bought is also a smaller particle than most of the ones available in the pet stores. We'll see. It was pretty cheap, too! Only 400 yen for a 2L bag.

Welcome to TCS! Although I'm from the US, I love having members from all across the world. It doesn't matter where any of us live because we all have the same thing in common -- our love for all things feline!

Piccalo and Pounce sound absolutely precious and I'm so thrilled that you'll be able to be reunited with your babies soon. I bet that that's both exciting and frightening. Please let us know when you'll be traveling so that we can send you many, many vibes for a safe and relaxing trip.

It's terrific that you've already "met" Lyrajean. I'm sure she'll be a tremendous help to you since she is already familiar with so much regarding cats in Japan. And, I think it's great that there's someone else who can understand what you may be going through and who can be of support.

Aside from that, I look forward to seeing pictures of Piccalo and Pounce in the future as well as getting to know you (your hubby and the kitties too!) better as we go on. I hope you find TCS as wonderful a place as I have found it. Welcome, again, and enjoy your stay!

I take claims of flushability with a serious grain of salt, whether for cat products or feminine products or whatever. Small plastic bags from the conbeni and twice weekly pickups of moeru gomi are a cat lover's best friend in Japan.

Anyways, enough talk of cat bodilly functions... WELCOME!!!!
