My 8 year old cats face was swollen twice the size a week ago Thursday.
I ran him over to the ER Vet and they said he had at least one abscessed tooth.

They gave him a 10day antibiotic shot, subq fluids, appetite inducing meds and pain meds and sent us home. He actually started to look and act better by the next day.

That next day we went to the regular vet and she wanted to do a CBC and other blood tests on him before surgery but she confirmed he had one possibly two abscessed teeth and maybe more that were bad.

She is an excellent vet here on long island so I trust her judgement.

We scheduled the surgery for the following Wednesday but by that Sunday
he was Not doing good again.

I ran him to the emergency vet place again and they put him on another
antibiotic and sent us home. The vet place was closed on Monday so
wednesday I brought him in for his surgery.

He had two very bad abscessed that came out and two teeth with big holes
that she said would have been abscessed soon so those came out too.

She said he would be out of it that day but by the next day, he should be
doing better and eating on his own.

I've been back to the vet every day. He's not eating. He's still running a
temp of 103.5 which is a little high. So I have to force feed him.

He has drainage coming out of his eye on that side and he's drooling.
The drainage is mixed with blood.

They gave him more SUB Q fluids today.

HE'S MISERABLE. They took more blood today to see what his white cell
count is and what his liver levels are.

He's a big cat so he is in danger of that liver disease.

He's lost 2.5 pounds in one week.

I want to see what this blood test says tomorrow.

I am thinking about taking him into Manhattan to get a second opinion
of what could be wrong with him.

I need suggestions of what this could be????

Why isn't he kicking this infection?

They don't want to switch the antibiotic he is one because they said
he is on one of the best for this problem (ANTIROBE) sp?? and that
if we keep switching antibiotics other problems could arise.

I'm sick. I need suggestions from anyone who maybe has been through this.

Thank you.

Did you get the test results back? I would suggest you get a copy of the complete results and come back here and tell us what they are point by point, it would help us more.

I am so sorry to hear your cat is going through this.

No I didn't. The blood test he had before his surgery came back good.
The blood they took today should come back tomorrow.
Thank you.

Please please please keep force feeding him as much as you can, and then force feed him some more. 2.5lbs in a week is very bad, and you do not want his liver to go bad - that will be a big problem. How are you doing that? Are you syringe feeding him? Have you tried baby food? Hills A/D? What are you feeding him right now?

The ongoing infection, inappetance, and eye drainage are all very troubling.
I agree that the loss of 2.5 lbs in one week is very significant. Since Prettyboy had hydration, I wonder if they weighed him after the fluids were given. The weight loss might be attributable to the fluids having been absorbed by his body.

When you mention taking Prettyboy to Manhattan, are you considering AMC (The Animal Medical Center)? I was going to suggest that to you. I've taken two of my cats there and was very satisfied with the level of expertise and care. If Prettyboy was my cat, that's where I'd be taking him now.

Thank you all for your suggestions and support.

Prettyboy has gone to the bridge.

My heart is completely broken.

Sunday he started panting and pacing and looking unresponsive in his eyes.
I rushed him to the ERVet and they confirmed that he went blind. They put
him in an oxygen tank but he did not get better.

He was clearly suffering and they had no clue why this could be happening.

They still had a ton of tests they could do but did say that putting him down
would be the kindest thing to do and seeing how much suffering he was
going through I totally agreed.

They said there seem to be some sort of a neurological problem, maybe
a undetected brain tumor?

He second blood test the day before he died came back with slightly
elevated numbers showing inflamation.

I was syringe feeding him AD food with water 3 big syringes 3 times a day.
He was on antibiotics and pain meds.

He was a huge cat and although part maine coon and I know those
cats are big and he was very tall and very long, he was still way too big.

I was told years ago that one of his xrays came back looking like he
might have an enlarged heart but they felt that was due to his weight.
I could have pursued that with an invasive procedure but I chose not to.

Maybe he would still be alive if I had done that or if I had had his teeth
checked years ago or if if if........

He was an ex feral cat and although VERY bonded to me he was terrified
of all other humans and hated all other animals, so each time I brought
him to the vet in the past it was during times that I really felt there
was no way around it. Like a year ago or so ago he came down with
crystals and knowing the severity of that I rushed him right in to the vet.

I have three indoor only ex feral cats....well had.... and I am/was bonded to
him the most.

He came into my life when I had had no cats for 12 years after my childhood
cats passed away from old age, and I can say that God sent him to me
to rescue me, which he so beautifully did do.

I am all alone (human wise) and I can't tell you the depth of which he will be missed.

PRETTYBOY Your Mama loves you from here to the moon and back again forever more.

Oh, I am so sorry to read this. Prettyboy lived up to his name -what a very beautiful boy he was. I'm glad he came into your life - it sounds like you were meant for each other.

You tried so hard to get him well - he knew that, and he knew he was loved.

Like many others here, I know the grief of losing one of your babies. My heart goes out to you.

Thank you for your sympathy and good wishes.

Thank you for gifts in honor of my boy, Prettyboy.

I had the revelation today that deep down inside I knew and feared that
my furry boy would not be with me for 20 years. I loved him so fiercely that
my heart ached at the thought that he would leave me early.

He came into my life during a time where I had had no cats for 12 years.

I didn't want any pets. I knew the heart ache of loosing them when they
got old and my finances had become shaky and knew I need not take in
any more once my childhood kittys had gone to the bridge.

Prettyboy was one of the last ones in the vets office I had rescued after
about 12 that I had fixed and adopted out and the vet said, he's been
here two weeks now and no one is adopting this one...you need to
come get him. And I huffed and thought OH WELL I guess I have a cat now.

Prettyboy came into my life during a time where I was thinking there was
no reason to come home, no one was there, who cares if I'm there or not?

Prettyboy came into my life during a time where I had no real meaningful
purpose.

In between my traveling, I had no rhyme or reason for my life.

Prettyboy came into my life and taught me over the first few years,
and reminded me what it was like to love something so fiercely that
life took on a whole new meaning.

Because of Prettyboy my inner self, my inner personality, came alive again
and reminded me of the compassionate person I am and have always been
even though lost for awhile.

Prettyboy, reminded me to get back to being proactive about being
compassionate toward every living thing...yes even towards humans.

During every part of my life, happiness, sadness, stress, gladness, Prettyboy
was there for me to share that with. There was no more wondering why
I was bothering to come home. I knew why and WANTED TO!

I will miss that daily ritual of when I came home from work of laying down
on the bed with him so we could hug and cuddle and I could pet him and
he could lick my face and all the worries, stresses, nonsense of the day
would completely disappear because he was there making none of that matter.

But in his memory, I will remind myself not to slide back into indifference,
not to slide back into thinking who cares, but to remember that I have
other kitties inside with me that I love and who love me. And that I also have
other kitties that live outside that depend on me. That yes, even some humans
that might still need me to be there for them too.

I will remember that he saved my life for a reason and that I need to keep
that reason alive.

Prettyboy your mama loves you to the moon and back again forever!!!
Thank you for saving me.
