I volunteer with a rescue group and was told by someone that there was a mommy cat and some few month old kittens at their apartment complex. Then I was told that mommy was pregnant again and was due any day. This was on Sunday. I said I would take them in, the person wanted to catch them himself. Long story short, I never heard back from him so I tracked him down to see what apartment complex he lives at. Found it and found the cats. I got the kittens, they are about 4 months old. The problem is that I can't tell if mommy already had her babies or if the guy was wrong about her being due any day and they're still in there.
People on the property said she looked like she was about to pop, so she must have already had them. I looked everywhere and couldn't find them. I ended up having to leave her so she could still nurse them if they're there. I'm going to keep going back to check.
What are signs that a cat has just had kittens? She feels thin but has a little bit of a bloated belly. She has some saggy teets, but I didn't know if that could be from having previous litters (which she has had.)
If she had the babies, she was away for them for about 3-4 hours at least. She was sitting out in the open when I arrived, she came to me for love and hung out, then I caught her and put her in a carrier. It took me a while to catch the older kittens. Then I took the older kittens to their foster and kept her with me because I didn't know if she had already had the new kittens. I went back right after I dropped older kittens off and looked all over for the babies. Let mommy out of the carrier in hopes that she would go to them. She didn't. She laid around and groomed herself.
Any thoughts? I have a good amount of experience with cats, but not pregnant cats so I'm at a total loss. I don't want to leave her there for too long if she already had them because I don't want her to get pregnant again. Lots of strays in the area.
