Anyone know a good place to order Prescription Diet K/D online??

Hi,

My cat recently got switched over to canned renal food, and I was just wondering if anyone buys this online anywhere. I'd like to get a carton of 24 5.5 oz cans. So far, it seems like my vet's price (around $1.70 per can) is as good as what I'm finding on the net.

Thanks,
Keith

Hi Keith-

I have had good service ordering from Petfooddirect.com in the past with other foods. However, their prices for k/d are higher than buying from my vet, so that's what I've been doing.

However, my boy is really resisting the k/d, so I might have to give up on it soon--I've tried everything.

Do you have any tips for getting him to eat this?

Prescription foods usually are a better price, or the same price, through the vet. Most vets sell the food as a convenience to their clients, they don't make all that much profit on it.

If you do order it on line you will need a prescription written by your vet. Do not buy prescription food from a place that does not require a prescription. If they are selling with out requiring a prescription the food is probably bootleg.

HappilyRetired, have you tried Hi Tor Neo? PetFoodDirect also sells it, and Amazon (PetfoodDirect goes out of stock often on it though) But I would research it and ask your vet if it would be appropriate to feed your cat instead of the K/D. Boo would have nothing to do with the K/D and thankfully I found the Hi Tor Neo on Tanya's CRF Site (www.felinecrf.org)

I Agree with Otto completely, they have to sell it only with a prescription. Hi Tor Neo however does not need an RX, BUT it may not be exactly what your cats need, hence my saying you should consult your vet before feeding it. It is very low in phos and protein. My Boo loved it.

As far as ordering K/D online I never did. Just got it through the vet.

WHAT?!? Oh dear! I am sooooooo sorry for your loss. I'm feeling so sad for you as I know it's been a hard-fought battle for you and Coco.

I found the Hi Tor through Tanya's website, and my vet approves because he's concerned that the cat eat, and the Hi Tor while higher in phosphorus than the Rx foods is much lower than any other commercial food.

However, although he seemed to accept it a little more than the k/d, I'm throwing away more than he's eating.

I mix it with low sodium tuna or sardine water (which he loves), but he still eats very little. It's odd because he actually accepts that better than when I mix it with his all-time favorite Fancy Feast. I thought that would get him to eat, but he won't touch that at all.

He's eating something because I'm getting good stools in the litter box, and I just bought a baby scale (vet's advice), and he doesn't seem to be losing very much (he can afford to lose a little).

We still don't have a firm diagnosis, but he's had so much stress from the frequent blood tests and vet visits that my vet and I have agreed to leave him alone for the rest of September.

Can you tell me which baby scale you got and do you like it. I look at them all the time but there are so many to choose from and the reviews are so varied I can't ever make a decision.

^I'd be interested in that info, too. I could always ask what the vet uses but I never remember to. Right now I have a good digital postal scale (for weighing my reptiles) that works for the <10lbs cats, but despite being one that's supposed to weigh up to 15lbs it can't handle the male cats.

I bought a Redmon digital baby scale nearly 10 years ago, when Cleo was first diagnosed with CRF. I weigh all three cats about every week (well, sometimes every other week...) and it's held up great. When I kept it on my dresser, Lola would actually sleep in the tray. It weighs in Kg and lbs/oz, and goes up to 44 lbs. It weighs exactly the same as my vet's scale (I periodically weigh Cleo before and after vet visits to compare, and it has remained accurate over the years.)

Mine is the old style, with a curved tray (they don't even make this style anymore!) The new ones are flat and much nicer looking. I think I paid around $100 (price & shipping) ten years ago, so the price has actually dropped over the years!

There are also quite a few on eBay under digital baby scale.
