Newish cat help

I adopted a new kitty a month ago and I was warned by the APL that it would take her a long time to warm up to us in the house. Charna is doing fine with the other cats...its just humans she is petrified of.

She is getting better, I can get 2 feet away from her before she runs whereas before she would run as soon as she saw me.

She was previously an indoor kitty whose owner just dumped her off outside. She spent three months at the shelter because no one wanted her due to her not really being social.

I don't care if she is a lap cat, I just want her to be happy and to trust us...we will not dump her off.

Is there anything I can do? When I see her I tell her hello in my talking to kitties voice. I have not forced her to be social with me.

Will that felliway help with her anxiety towards me? I am a little hurt that she prefers the company of my one kitty who hates all other cats (except for Charna, odd). They sleep together but as soon as I get up, she runs.

I just feel bad for her that she is so afraid that she hides around humans. She must have had some horrid experiences for her to act like that. I am patient and I know eventually she will learn to trust but is there anything I can do to show her that I will always be there for her?

I think the Feliway is an excellent idea, but it may not make her more trusting. It will probably help calm her down so that she can start building her trust in you. It's just going to take time and lots and lots of patience. I tell my kitties "it's okay...it's okay" when I accidentally startle them. Do you spend time on the floor with her? That might help since it might be the "big human" that is scaring her and causing her to skitter away. Also, if you're free feeding, stop and be the bringer of the food. Then, she'll associate you with the good thing of food. While they're eating, sit on the floor and talk to her and pet her.
