My cat Jake will be 1 next month and we adopted him 9 months ago. He's been fixed and has never used the bathroom anywhere other then his litterbox. We have even switched litterboxes and litter brands a couple of months ago and he has never had a problem. We occasionally travel, and upon arriving home after being away for about 26 hours, discovered he had pee'd and pooped on our bed. I washed and changed his litter before we left and we have never had a single problem with him before. Wondering if anyone knows why he would do this and what course of action I should take in order to prevent this in the future.

I found the text in this book spot on, but the illustrations aren't helpful at all. Good over all book

This mat caught my eye because of its size and texture, which traps fine litter rather well. It's large enough for jumbo litterboxes, which is also a plus. It's not quite as easy to clean as a...

This scoop was a freebie with some clumping litter I bought last year, and I like it so much that I've bought a second one. It's perfect for fine clumping litter, which it sifts very thoroughly....

The first rule in this kind of situation is have a vet visit to r/o any medical problems.
Peeing in inappropriate places can be a sign of a UTI which is very dangerous in a male cat.
Is he peeing normally now? Keep watch of the box. But definately a vet visit IMO.

If the vet rules out anything medical, it could be behaviorial where he is upset when you travel, like a seperation anxiety, especially if it only happens WHEN you travel. Feliway may help in situations like this.
Good luck!

a VET VISIT WOULD BE IN ORDER, i AGREE. bUT i WILL SAY THAT WHEN MY FIRST 2 CATS WERE YOUNG, ONE, OR POSSIBLY BOTH, WOULD POOP AND PEE ON THE RUG IN THE BATHROOM UPON US RETURNING FROM BEING OUT OF TOWN. (sorry for the caps, didn't realize caps lock was on). They say cats are not vindictive, and I believe that to a point, but me being out of town is an upset to their routine and schedule, and they made it known it was not appreciated. It did stop eventually. i guess they figured out I was coming back.

Welcome to TCS!
My first inclination is the same as the others, I'd have the vet test his urine to rule out a UTI or any other urinary/health problems causing his inappropriate litterbox usage. It's so hard to tell with cats, but often by going outside the box they're trying to tell us something's wrong.
Once a health issue has been ruled out, we can then move on to address it as a behavioral issue. Some cats do not adjust well to change, and by being gone you may have freaked your kitty out a bit. It's also possible, if he's picky about his litterbox's cleanliness, that it was too dirty for his tastes (some cats require a very clean box). Next time you travel, I would try Feliway diffusers, or perhaps add some Rescue Remedy to his water.
