HELP! They no longer get along...

hi! this is my first time posting and i hope and i can get some help here since it is a holiday weekend and i'm not sure if the vet is in tomorrow.

i share my house with 4 cats: male siamese (about 13yrs old), female one-eyed black cat (soon to be 11yrs old), male tabby (just turned 2), and a little black female kitten (about 4 and a half months). all are fixed, except the kitten but i plan on having her spayed as soon as she's old enough.

yesterday morning the little kitten had a sudden diarrhea attack in the kitchen before i came home from work. by the time i got that all cleaned up, she got a hold of a plastic bag and i guess she got caught in the handle, started tearing thru the house, scaring all the other kitties. it sounded like a big fight broke out, with all the hissing, growling, and meowing. i ran from my computer to find them upstairs, with the culprits being the tabby and the kitten (who are usually inseparable). the kitten was also pooping diarrhea again. i ran them all into separate rooms until the kitten was isolated in our back sun room. i've kept her isolated for 24hrs with no more diarrhea attacks.

this morning when i reintroduced the kitten to the general population, everything was fine until she met up with the tabby. it sounded like another fight of the century. once again, i isolated the kitten. luckily, no one has been harmed in any of this, just a whole lot of horrible noise. originally i assumed it was the excitement of the noisy plastic bag that set everything off, but today the 2 cats can't even face each other without puffing up and hissing. why would they suddenly turn on each other? i've had the kitten since she was about 6wks (she's a rescue, so i'm unsure of exact age) and they have always been great with each other. the older cats really couldn't care less about anything that's been going on, and the tabby is acting normal with them, as is the kitten.

what could cause this sudden behavior change? should i be concerned about a medical condition in the kitten? i really don't know what to make of this whole situation, as this is the first time any disagreement has been seen between any of our cats.

thank you in advance for any insight!

after keeping an eye on my kitten this morning, i'm now wondering if she could be in heat. she is rubbing on the other cats, proudly displaying her backside, and was rather vocal when i first let her out to interact with the other felines. could this be upsetting to my young, neutered male tabby? just reaching for ideas here....

Your kitten is most likely in heat. It's too late now, but for future reference 4 months is more than enough to be spayed, kittens are better off spayed before their first heat.

However, I think the plastic bag incident has upset her tabby pal, it's called displaced aggression. First his kitten friend turns into a scary thing with a rattling ballooning attachment, then suddenly she smells funny and acts funny to him.

My advice is to call the vet as soon as they are open and schedule her spay. Cats can be spayed while in heat though it usually costs more. If you decide to wait until her cycle is over, it takes about 3 weeks I think, but get her in quickly after that, because once they start, they continue going into heat at shorter and shorter intervals.

Has the kitten been dewormed? Parasites are usually the cause of diarrhea in kittens, but since they are integrated all ouf your cats will have to have the de worming treatment.

Welcome to TCS to you and your four! Keep us posted.

PS, if the antagonism continues, you can get a feliway plug in diffuser or two, that will most likely help relations between all of them.

I think Otto is right. One of my cats had one season before she was spayed and the older (spayed) cat reacted badly towards her.
I bet the kitten hurtling around with a carrier bag following her hasn't helped matters.
When the kitten is spayed everything should return to normal soon enough.
