My dearest baby boy just turned 6 years and suddenly blocked for the 4th time and Vet had to do a perineal urethrostomy on him.

I know what it is and what was done but i have questions I am hoping someone here can answer.

Will he have a big hole under his tail below his anus now?

Can he ever go back out to his back yard again

Can he roll or pee out back

Will he dribble all the time

Will he have problems making it to the litterbox?

I am absolutely devastated and my poor other boy is so depressed he just sleeps all the time.

aww, poor both of you. I've read that many cats live long happy lives after that surgery - but perhaps the best course is for you to call your vet's office, now that you've had some time to recover from the shock of the whole process, and go over all your questions again. Or, if your vet has email, type up a list of questions and send them in.

It hard for any of us to absorb all the information a medical provider passes along, especially when we're emotionally involved - they know that and expect people to show up with questions.

I had a cat years ago that had that surgery and he lived to 14, peed normally, no drips no leaks, no litter box problems until the last week or so of his life (acute renal failure). He went outside with no problems, then stopped even wanting out after a while. If you are concerned, do have a chat with your vet to set your mind at ease

My cat had to have it in 2008, he dribbled for about a month but it stopped. He did get bad urine scald since he dribbled & couldnt lick because of the e-collar, but that went
away with a powder the vet gave us. He has no issues holding his pee to get to the litter box either.

A family member's cat just had this surgery last month & he didn't dribble pee at all, perfectly fine with no urine scald.

It is a horrible thing for an owner & cat to go through, I wish there was another choice ya know?

How is the sweet boy doing today?

Aw honey. It's OK. My Boo had that surgery done, he never dribbled, like walking around dribbling, but it's just like a woman that doesn't wipe, some excess will be there. I recommend keeping an eye on his rear end, especially if he is a long hair. If he is a long hair he needs to have a sanitary clip every now and again to keep the hair from collecting bacteria and causing a urinary tract infection. Otherwise he should live a completely normal life. My Boo was a little chubby at first so when he tried to clean the area, his belly fat would fall over both his areas, so I had to assist sometimes in cleaning up after his bathroom visits. He should have no problems making it to the litterbox, but while he is healing from his P/U surgery, I'm hoping your vet recommended putting the Yesterday's News or Shredded Newspaper in there, that is what mine did. Boo wasn't a big fan of it, but he used it. He never seemed to notice or care that his winker tinker was gone, but I was devastated when I saw him turn around in his kennel at the vet when I went to visit after the surgery. He had a huge stitched up gash on his behind and it just looked So HORRIBLE I was terrified. But it healed VERY nicely. He played, ran around and acted like a perfectly normal kitty. <3

He should have no problem going outside, either. I am glad you know what was done and how the surgery was performed. My vet did a good thing there, showing me in his medical book exactly, step by step, what he would be doing.

But DO keep an eye out for his bottom and make sure it stays clean, because urinary tract infections -can- happen. <3
