Kittens and heat

Hey there!

I'm on my sofa infront of my fan because it is soooo hot in my apartement! It's around 40 degres outside. It feels like a sauna in here! My kitten of 2 months is running around playing with her kitty toys, BUT I've noticed she's occasionally taking a break, panting and laying down spread out on my wooden floor. I gave her an ice cube to play with and she got bored with it. Do I have to worry about her being too hot or having trouble breathing or anything at all??

It has gotten to over ninety here many times this summer. I would say not to encourage play. Good idea about the ice cube. I put fans on the floor for my cats and some like it and some don't. Some are laying down in front of them, and others are laying in the sun!! Go figure.

Its good your kitty has a hard cool surface to lay on. Keep the water available and change it often so it is fresh and cool.

If you are really worried, take a cold pack and cover it with a towel. See if kitty wants to lay on the towel....I bet she won't though.

She should be fine, Just watch for rapid breathing and lethergy. As long as she is wanting to play, she must be doing ok.

But, I think giving her a fan is a good thing. This heat won't last forever. In fact, our heat wave broke yesterday....almost jacket weather this am!!

I had this problem the other day. It was stiffling in my appartment, and my 4 month old kitten wouldn't stop running around (she's crazy)
She would start panting and breathing heavily, so I just took her and dipped her under cool water- she didn't appreciate it too much, but it cooled her down and made her stop playing for a good hour while she dried herself off. If you do this though, don't use cold water or you could send them into shock- cool/ lukewarm water will do.

I live in Texas and we have strings of 100º+ days. Of course, we also have central AC, but we don't keep our AC set below 77º. When it's over 100 outside, it's still hot inside. You cat should be fine as long as there's water available and a cooler surface to lay on such as a tile floor or uncarpeted area. If you're really concerned you can wipe your kitty down with a damp wash cloth. Be careful though, you don't want them to get chilled. For the most part, they know how to cope, which is why your kitty is taking frequent breaks and laying on the wood floor.
