...with some anonymity to be honest.

I guess the story starts back in August. This mainly about my job. If you have read some of my posts you might remember that I work in a call center handling inbound calls. The call center I work for has one client, a cell phone company for the sake of this post I'll call this company Bob. Anyway about a month ago I got an express mail saying they were closing down on Sept 30 of this year. Shocked, angry and sad I did the only thing a girl could do who was having an emotional breakdown. I called in sick for the first time in 10 months.

After that I looked into the unemployment law here in Texas. Not only do I work 40 hours a week I'm also a full time college student taking 15 credit hours (5 classes) this semester. I wanted to know if that status would stop me from getting unemployment. Looking into it.. the answer is not really no so I kept my full time schedule.

Fast forward to today the client Bob, decided to keep our call center after all. We are one of the top performing call centers they have. They said if they lost us they felt their quality of Customer Service would drop. I work for a company who provides call centers and out of our entire company we are the only center they are keeping. The other centers that we provide will be dropped from Bob's calls and moved to other clients. We also got a new client today a pharmaceutical company, I'll them Steve for this post. This is great and all... it means I still have a job. At my job we currently have 200 employees, at beginning of August we had 350... and this time last year we had 650. There has been massive lay offs this year. They fired people for any reason they could find... such as being late 1 minute (I'm not kidding...1 minute really.). It wasn't until this 350 number that they had no reason to fire people anymore, and when they had no reason they just did it to save money.

To say I've been stressed would be an understatement. I feel terrible.

I got my vacation time recently and I've been trying to get days off to go see my mother in Arizona. Because of travel I need days off together to see her. So I submit for a week off, I get two weeks vacation after all. First request... all days denied. The second request it comes back and they give me alternating days off... This made me so angry that I took a break to go cry in my car.

Let me give you my schedule so you can understand. My classes I have 3 classes that meet Monday/Wednesday from 8am-1pm. On Tuesday/Thursday I have two classes and they meet in the morning 10am-1pm. I work Wed-Sun 2:30pm-11pm. So basically on Wednesday and Thursday I'm "working" from dawn to dusk practically. They gave me Wednesday, Friday and Sunday off on the week I requested.

I feel this was pretty hurtful. You know either or not it was intentional it doesn't matter. Because you can see all they did was waste my vacation and I still cannot see my mother. The last time I saw my mother was about a year and a half ago. I think this is ridiculous, I really do. I've done nothing but show up and smile for over a year for these people. They can't even give me the vacation I'm obligated to by company policy. I see people get entire weeks off ALL THE TIME AROUND ME. I got one of my co-workers to take the Saturday for me and work it. I'm petitioning to the operations manager to give me the Thursday off. At the end of the day I'll be stepping up my job search because quite frankly I'm tired of this environment.

/endrant.

Ugh, the lovely world of call centers.

I am so sorry you are going through all of this hun.
Is there anyone in the HR department that you can maybe discuss this with? There really needs to be a better work/life balance. I worked at a few call centers in my time and have had to deal with the exact same issues many times. I hope that someone there will be able to work something out for you so that you can see your Mom.
