I just got some information on their shelter yesterday and they were asking for a donation and I know its legit but I just wondered if anyone knows if they are a good shelter or not and if they rescue cats and dogs as well. I am considering sending a small donation but I want to make sure that I send my donations to good shelters. As I am planning on sending one to the apsu as well.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
North Shore Animal League is huge and does a lot of good work. They rescue cats and dogs, fund research, run a no kill shelter, provide educational information - all kinds of stuff. http://www.animalleague.org/

You can also consider Best Friends http://www.bestfriends.org/ or Alley Cat Allies http://www.alleycat.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=191. Alley Cat Allies fights for feral cats and is the only national organization (I know of) that works exclusively for cats.

All of that said, I don't know what the apsu is, but I'm sure there are local shelters or foster networks that could really use the money as opposed to the larger, national organizations with huge budgets. What about searching through Petfinder (http://www.petfinder.com) in your zip code and finding a local organization that appeals to you?

“This charity does not meet one or more of the 20 standards for Charity Accountability.†from The Better Business Bureau of the United States and Canda website

Also this:

“Evaluation Conclusions

North Shore Animal League America (NSALA) does not meet the following 2Standards for Charity Accountability.

Standard 12: Detailed Functional Breakdown of Expenses – Include in the financial statements a breakdown of expenses (e.g., salaries, travel, postage, etc.) that shows what portion of these expenses was allocated to program, fund raising, and administrative activities. If the charity has more than one major program category, the schedule should provide a breakdown for each category. NSALA does not meet this Standard because its financial statements did not include a detailed functional breakdown of expenses by natural classification (e.g., salaries, travel, postage, etc.) that shows what portion of these expenses was allocated to program, fund raising, and administrative activities.

Standard 19: Cause Related Marketing – Clearly disclose how the charity benefits from the sale of products or services (i.e., cause-related marketing) that state or imply that a charity will benefit from a consumer sale or transaction. Such promotions should disclose, at the point of solicitation: (a) the actual or anticipated portion of the purchase price that will benefit the charity (e.g., 5 cents will be contributed to abc charity for every xyz company product sold), (b) the duration of the campaign (e.g., the month of October), (c) any maximum or guaranteed minimum contribution amount (e.g., up to a maximum of $200,000). NSALA does not meet this Standard because an affinity card is promoted through an arrangement with a bank. Promotional information for the card states, in part, “a percentage of every purchase goes directly to NSAL to support its ongoing efforts.†Neither the amount benefiting NSALA from issuance and renewals of cards, nor the portion from transactions made with the card that will benefit Audubon are disclosed.

In addition, the BBB Wise Giving Alliance requested but did not receive complete information on the organizationâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s governance and oversight, effectiveness measures, finances, solicitation materials, annual report, and donor privacy and is unable to verify the organizationâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s compliance with the following 12Standards for Charity Accountability: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 18.â€

Lots of problems with this place.

I used to get cool stamps from them (free) asking for donations. I never sent them any - I really don't support these kinds of shelters as I really don't know about them (if what they claim is true).

If I'm gonna help out a shelter, its gonna be one in my backyard!

Generally speaking, it's better to support your local shelters than to send donations to a national group. Then you know your money is going to help the local animals.

This might be a shameless plug, but I donated a few bucks to Blind Cat Rescue in NC after winning an ebay auction. I checked out their site and it really tugs at your heartstrings! At least check them out if you want to donate something...

I CRIED when I read about Sylvester in the "Meet The Cats" RB memorial section.

I love Blind Cat Rescue. I am not associated with them (I'm in NC, but they are in another part of the state), but they do wonderful work. I've also donated to them after winning an eBay auction.
