The kitten that I just took in (who is approx. 4 months old, and is 4.1 lbs), has lice. I took him two days ago, and that night a noticed an adult flea and some flea dirt, so I treated him with Advantage.
Then last night I saw what appeared to be dandruff all over him, but it was completely stuck to his hair. I looked it up online, and realized they were actually nits.

So I took him to the vet today, and she said that the Advantage won't work on lice, so I should treat him with a flea shampoo that contains pyrethrins. She said to do it every three days (she also said that she had a cat who also had lice, and that's how she treated it). She saw the nits, but couldn't see any living fleas or lice on him, but the lice would be hard to see since he's light colored.

I got the shampoo at Petsmart. It says right on the bottle that it treats lice, but the instructions say 'do not reapply for two weeks'. So I called the vet back, and got a receptionist who said, rather testily, "just do what the vet says"
.

I'm concerned about poisoning him with all these chemicals. On top of Advantage and the flea shampoo, he was just de-wormed and had his first shots. So what do you think I should do? I'm going to do the first shampooing at least. I need to run out and get some gloves first, though. I also saw some sprays and powders that said they'd treat lice- do you think that's a better option? I worry that he'd lick those off.

Please talk with the vet ... telling her or take in the bottle and show her what it says ...

you may want to look up de flea ... it is NON permethin based and also will not affect the topical meds

Just wanted to update that I ended up not using the flea shampoo. I called another vet who recommended washing him in Dawn to get the Advantage off of him, and then using Frontline (because it can kill feline lice), so that's what I did. I read that permethrins can be toxic, so I was worried about it.

He handled the bath well and is doing great this morning; hopefully my other ones don't get any lice!

Just like when humans get lice, clean any bedding/fabric he's been on.

Do you still have the receipt for the shampoo? I'd take it back. Spend the money on a toy or something.
