Cat urinating outside the litter box

Hi, I am new the forum. I am a first time cat owner to a cat that was adopted from the local shelter approximately 3 weeks ago. He is a 4 year old neutered male named Bug that is kept strictly indoors and has no history other than "stray" that we are aware of. We have 3 animal-friendly dogs and a 22 month old toddler who is 100% supervised with the pets.

When he first came home, we set up our guest bedroom for him and kept him in there for about 5 days so he could quietly adjust to his new home. We let him out of the room to have free range of the house and kept the entry of the guest bedroom door babygated so he can come and go as he wants and have a safe place to retreat. Everything has been great and he has quickly taken over the household and has no apparent issues with the dogs or the toddler. We have thought he was the perfect cat and we couldn't believe he ended up in the shelter.

About 4 days ago, I noticed that neither of his litter boxes had any urine in them (we have a 2 story house - one litter box is in "his" room and the other is in the upstairs laundry). We were using "Yesterday's News" litter as that was what the shelter was using and he had not been having issues. Both litter boxes are covered, again, as that is what he had at the shelter. So about 4 days ago when I noticed the dry boxes, I saw him squatting in the corner of our family room. I yelled at him and he sauntered to his room and used the box. Then he did it again. So we locked him back in his room, took the cover off the box and switched to Cat Attract litter. He's been using the box ever since without issue.

Today, I let him back out of the guest room and all appeared fine. Then I noticed him sort of slinking around so I quietly followed him and caught him trying to pee in my dining room! So, he's now back in the guest room. I am going to take him to the vet for a UA/UC but if it was a UTI, wouldn't he not be using the litter box when he's in the guest room? I am at a loss.

We love him already but I cannot have him peeing all over my house. BTW, this is a brand new construction house so there have never been other cats or animals in it besides our dogs (the dogs are 100% house trained). I would love any suggestions. I don't want to return him to the shelter but if we don't get this issue corrected, I will have to. I'm not interested in making him an outside cat.

I appreciate any insight anyone can give me. Thanks!

There are no 100% rules for UTIs, just very common symptoms and signs. Peeing outside of the box, even a few times, is the most common sign. Until you can clear him of this you'll just be guessing and anything you do to correct the peeing may be rather useless.
I hope you can get in before the holiday weekend, tomorrow is pretty much your only chance.

What are you cleaning his peed on spots with?

Thanks for the quick reply! I am actually taking him in at 4:15 today. I have been using Nature's Miracle in the area I saw him squatting. I am going to run the steam cleaner with vinegar tonight.

Good job for promptly getting him in! I hope he tests all clear.

Per another thread about urine removers, LDG knows her stuff brand wise in this area.

Your next steps, whether this is a UTI or just behavioral, is to work on what could be stressing him. And it honestly sounds like you have a full house. Cats do get stressed easily, though, and that could be why putting him in his own quiet room helps.

In any case, invest in some feliway diffusers - make sure you get enough to cover the square footage of all the rooms he goes into. You can also try adding bach's rescue remedy (pet version) to the water, it's fine for the dogs to have it, too. You may want to go ahead and keep him in his room for a few days to sort of "retrain" him, too.

New house or not, no one wants their house to smell like cat urine. Just have some patience with him and a lot of determination and you should be able to work through this.

(I would have added more earlier but it was a quick post before I had to run into town for an errand )

Thanks again for the reply. The UA came back clean and there were no crystals in the urine. So, the vet believes it is behavioral. I was actually hoping that it was a UTI in hopes it would be an easier fix. I have a feeling this is why my "perfect" cat was at the shelter.

I ordered some nok-out to make sure the area he was peeing on is 100% clean. I have him locked in the guest room but he is so unhappy being away from all of us. I really don't want to take him back to the shelter. I figured I'd keep in the guest room another week so that he has more time to relax and use the litter box and I can make sure the carpet is clean of pee.

The vet did mention using Buspar for anxiety. Has anyone used that on their cat with success? I just have a hard time believing it is anxiety causing the issue as he completely owns the place and rules us all!

Cats are odd that way, though. Yes, I know white cat lover on here uses buspar - but that's for her adorable psycho kitty who absolutely hates other cats.

Actually, you should be glad it came back clean. UTI/blockages can kill. And they're not an easy fix - litter box avoidance with that does become partly behavioral, too. (it's never so simple with a cat )

Try the feliway and rescue remedy before settling on buspar. I can't guarantee they'll work but they don't have health related side effects that a medication has. If he only has one litter box, add one or two more - the compromise is better than peeing outside the box.

I wish you good luck on getting this corrected, keep us updated and report back if something doesn't work and you need more help.
