I've been reading up on everything about diet for diabetic cats and the info is pretty overwhelming, so I thought I'd ask here. The short version is: Cotton's been recently diagnosed, we're still trying to regulate his blood sugar, and he can't eat dry anymore. The additional problem is that he really doesn't like the prescription canned food that the vet carries and the lists of possibly approprite food are maing my head spin.

So I'm wondering what your diabetic cats eat.

He's eating Blue buffalo canned as part of his diet and likes it, but the vet said it's not ideal for him because the carbs are a bit high. (it's better than dry, but if we can do better, I will) I've looked at the Wilderness as well, but it doesn't list carbs on the label (and it's very close to being out of my price range.

I generally shop at Petsmart if that helps, but I'm in canada so it doesn't carry everything that you see in the US.

I got my food list off www.yourdiabeticcat.com. Yes, it is the supermarket kind of food. But this site is run by a very knowledgeable vet.

My cats (all of them, easier than seperating out my DC) eat Friskies wet, Mixed Grill, Poultry Platter, Turkey and Giblets, Country Style Dinner. All pate. Cat food with gravy is a no no.

Also certain flavors of Fancy Feast. It is all listed on the site and it explaines why even these low end brands are used for diabetics.

There are also flavors of 9 lives listed among others not available in this part of the country. I know there is a bias against this food, but even the low ends have their place in feline nutrition.

All my cats are in fine shape, good coats, bright eyes and happy.
