When it is dinnertime, I usually am perched in my reclining chair with a tray with my dinner on it, watching Wheel of Fortune and Persi is perched on the left arm of the chair waiting for his share of dinner. This has been going on for four years. About then, Alley came to live with us. I always tried to give her special good treats like chicken and fish but she never ever wanted anything at all except her dried food.
Last night I had a quick ham sandwich. Persi was in his usual spot but Persi does not like ham. But he must have thought that surely I was having a ham and cheese sandwich and would give him some cheese. He was clearly becoming irritated when I offered him ham but no cheese.
Alley, as usual, was in the background watching. But for some reason, the first time in 3 1/2 years, she approached me and put her paws up on the recliner and I held out a small bite of ham for her. She sniffed it for what seemed like an eternity and then ate it to my surprise. At that point in time, she turned into a vicious tiger! She actually jumped onto my lap for some more ham! This spiraled Persi into a rage and he jumped down and headed upstairs.
The timid, shy, aloof, recluse Alley was there in my lap, snapping up the few more pieces of ham I offered her. I am almost lucky to still have all of my fingers!
What the heck has come over her? What a changeover. OK, I guess ham is not the best thing to be feeding a cat. But maybe now I can get her to eat a little chicken or tuna or something. Wow, I wonder what happened to her?
