Pictures of our New Kitty! (Name to be Determined)

So some people have been following my "I have the kitten bug..." thread and know the story of this new guy. But if you haven't, here's the skinny.

I found myself feeling "broody" for a new baby kitten. After some suggestions DH and I decided I could get a kitten in a few months or we could look into fostering for the local shelter/rescues. While looking for fostering information on the local shelter via their website, I decided to look over their available animals. I fell in love with a kitty they called "Jinx".

"Jinx" is not a baby kitten but rather is between 1-2 years old. He had been at the shelter since June and his "time" was up if they got one more kitty in, they expected that to be Friday afternoon. I drove down to meet him and brought him home Friday. It was a good thing I went because while I was waiting for his shots and blood tests after deciding to adopt him, another kitty came in.

They called him a Blue Tabby Oriental Shorthair. Who knows what he really is, just a pretty moggy. On to the pictures!

Here are his shelter pics:

And here are two pics I took today:

He is very difficult to photograph. Whenever you talk to him to try to get him to look up at the camera, he thinks you want him to come over for more lovins. Ah well... good problem to have I guess. I will try for more pictures later!

Does anybody have any good name suggestions? I don't really like Jinx because he is not unlucky and I don't want a negative sounding name for him. The husband has suggested Aero or Axel but we are open to whatever sounds good for him.

He has been settling in at the house since Friday and we let him out to start intros last night. Things went very well with minimal hissing and no growling, swatting or fighting. Everyone has been socializing with supervision today and seem to be getting along very well.

He is so very handsome and a cutie pie in general!!! Love how tall he is.

I am terrible with names so I am no help there. But I'm so glad that you saved him! What timing!!

We are leaning towards "Jinkers". We have already been calling him that as a nickname for "Jinx" and that's sortof sticking. Just don't want "Jinx" because he is very lucky, not Jinxed!

What a handsome new kitty! I think once he calms down and settles into your home you'll be able to get more pics of him. It's great that he's responding to you and comes to you for attention and lovins!

How about the name Friday?

what about another X-Files name? someone else suggested Skinner [altho that's kinda weird - makes me think of skinning! but i was thinking, maybe Fox, Dana [works for either gender], Scully, Agent, ET, or one of The Lone Gunmen: Melvin Frohike, John Fitzgerald Byers and Richard Langly.

Im rubbish with names but he is a gorgeous kitty!

Isn't he a little beauty!! He looks like he's settled in brilliantly as well

First of all I am SO happy you adopted an adult! They are so much harder to rehome than young kittens. Secondly he is so incredibly handsome! Congrats hun!

Yes I think he is very handsome too and was going to ask if he is tall. He looks a lot like our Kille-Poika who is very skinny and tall. We do not know nothing about Kille's parents but since his full brother is Lynx Point mix we can assume Kille also has something oriental in him. Is your guy talkative too? Maybe he has some other oriental traits too.

And I like Jinkers or Jinky for a name.

He is very long and tall. I think he needs to gain a little weight but maybe I'm just used to Spooky and Mulder who are chubbier. He is VERY talkative. He loves to be petted and rubbed on but so far won't play. Also we have discovered he is terrified of fans. Ceiling fans don't bother him but desk or stand fans freak him out. Intros are still going great!

Thank you for saving Jinx. He is just gorgeous. How about Hijinx instead? Or, he looks like a Jeeves to me, but I'm strange.

Here are some more photos of "Jinkers" today. DH has decided to give up trying to rename him and won't agree to calling him anything else now...

Yes... he did go belly up for the 2nd picture! But he rolled back over before the camera shot... Its awesome how much more relaxed he is today. Still terrified of fans. I think his time at the shelter has made him forget (or maybe he never knew) the sounds of a regular house because every time we do anything he gets startled.

Jinkers is making himself right at home. There is no more hissing or arguing between the cats so he is free to come out of his room as he pleases. He is coming out more and more and running in there less often. The other two boys haven't yet "made friends" but they are tolerating him.

He seems unsure about the whole house thing, but I believe he has been a pet at some time. Maybe the months at the shelter confused him. He seems unsure as to what is allowed and what is scary here, etc. So we are celebrating every little milestone towards accepting the house.

Last night he braved the fan in our bedroom to come in for lovins at bedtime with the other two boys, and even got up on the bed!

Today he has discovered the COUCH!

Jinkers looks so much more relaxed and happy. It's great to see him fit right in!

thanks for saving a beautiful kitty. I love his looks and he sounds wonderful. My Bru is long and lean....and very athletic.

He has such a sweet and peaceful face. So glad he's fitting in well.

He is doing really well I think. Intros went almost too smoothly. The existing boys are very very laid back though.

It facinates me to see Jinkers learning and accepting his new environment a little all the time. It makes me wonder where he was before and what happend to him that he has to re-learn to understand everyday occurences of a normal housecat. But maybe his behavior is normal for a cat who was in a shelter for 3+ months?

I am thinking of starting a new thread to discuss his little victories and peculiarities or maybe a blog. I'd like to know if his behavior is normal for a shelter cat or if people think maybe something else happend to him.

He is very friendly and loving. He has so far shown zero "bad" behaviors. But his actions anand responses seem peculiar to me.

More pics tomorrow!

That boy is gorgeous! Congratulations on your new addition! I rather like the name Hijinks, too, simply because he looks like once he gets the hang of your house, he's going to be up to more than few hijinks!

You could always spell it HyJinks or something like that.

I looked at your other cats and noticed they have two-part names. Now I think Jinkers should 'fit in' and have another name too! Maybe he would not be called by it but just to 'own it'. (All my cats have three names, call me silly). It's kind of hard to pair up Jinkers with some 3-letter guy's name but above post made me think of maybe Hugh Jinkers? I don't know what names you like, and as a non-native English speaker I don't know which order sounds more natural, eg Ben Jinkers or Jinkers Ben?

I have 3 laid back boys too and while we knew two of them had had a home, and had no trouble acclimating to the house, one was certainly a little more house-daft. He had not been in the shelter long when we picked him up but we do not know how long he was on the streets. We doubt not long but it was kind of obvious he came from somewhat deprived circumstances.

Teppo was 3 yo old when we got him, and while it was obvious he knew things like couch, TV and fridge - he seemed to be pretty ignorant of lot of fun things a cat could do. I literally taught him to play. I showed him where he can go but every time he'd be walking around and an item was in a new location (say shopping bag on the floor) his butt would drop, and he'd approach it with great caution. He still has some of that behavior with odder/darker items - when his brothers hurry to sniff feeling secure in home environment. And he's the least scaredy cat in general! Unfortunately, he also was very unfamiliar with car while he otherwise is the least bothered by loud noises, thunder etc.

I think the oddest thing was the playing to me. He really wanted to when he realized what was going on but was quite lost and clumsy. Now he is the toy hog, getting back all that lost time. He learns all new things slower than others though, and I think it is because he has not been exposed to lot in his younger years. He sure knows human food and telly, so I think I know what he has been doing!

He will eventually get a middle name, we are just waiting to get to know him better to pick one. Its just something that happened with the other two so we are waiting to see what sticks to him. Mulder's middle name is actually Maximus so it doesn't have to be limited to 3 letters, it just has to kind of happen. I had Spooky for 6 months before his middle name came along, so don't worry Jinkers will have one too.

Daily Update: Last night he discovered the floor toys. I heard them being batted around when I was in bed and the other boys were with me. When I went to see, he stopped playing like he thought he was being bad. We'll work on it.

I used to have a beautiful solid grey kitten (or blue, which I guess is the appropriate term) named Ace, after Ace Freeley from KISS. I thought that was a cute name...and also somewhat lucky if your gambling. I also know a person named Graylin that I swore I would name my next cat after. Well, that didn't happen, because Marshmallow was black and white. (Like a Marshmallow, sort of ) I think Graylin's a pretty name, too, and unusual. I think Jinkers Graylin insert your last name here would be lovely. I can see where they get the Oriental Shorthair because of his long body, large ears, and tabby coloring. Whatever he is, he is certainly very beautiful. Bless you for giving him a good home!

Today Jinkers has progressed to sitting on the back of the couch watching the birds with his brothers.

In this photo we can tell he feels right at home - enough to "talk back" when I was trying to get his attention away from watching Daddy mow to take his picture. Look at that attitude!

And just so they don't feel left out, here's one of Spooky and Mulder. Who have been fabulous with the introduction of a new buddy to their household, even if they haven't quite "made friends" yet...

I love the attitude in that one picture! Definitely feeling more at home!

Don't forget to add him to your siggy!

I love the new pics. He really is fitting in with Spooky and Mulder, isn't he? They are all quite dapper.

Well today we had to go to the vet. He has been sneezing and coughing since yesterday and it kept getting worse. I put him in the carrier and took him to the vet, and no sneezes or coughing. No signs of problems in his nose, chest, mouth/throat. He was very very well behaved at the vet. She thinks he's either allergic to something in the house, or he's got an upper respiratory infection. She gave him an antibiotic shot and if he continues to sneeze we will get him an allergy shot. No new pics today but I will update again soon.

He is fitting in really well. They aren't all buddies yet (Spooky and Mulder are BEST friends) but they are tolerating each other and there has been some play and grooming.

Turns out he is bigger than I thought. The vet said he is 12 lbs!!! And he seems so SMALL next to Spooky and Mulder!
