I know there are quite a few members on the east coast. I just saw the update on Earl on the news and it does not look good for the coast.

Please know I am thinking of you....you were my first thought watching this. Even NYC is a possible hit.

Please take good care. Be safe. Pray Earl takes a sharp right and goes out to sea.

My husband's name is Earl. First he got the "Earl's in the trunk" jokes (Dixie Chick's song), then "My Name is Earl," and now he's a hurricane.
I just really hope that it isn't as bad as they are preparing for.

My thoughts are with all of the TCSers on the east coast. Well, every person and every feline and other critter in Earl's path.

My thoughts are personally also with the Outer Banks of North Carolina. My father was stationed at Cherry Point as a young Marine, and my sister was born on base there, near Havelock and Moorehead City. They spent many weekends on the Outer Banks and really loved the area. We took a wonderful family vacation there in 1985 and my aunt recently mailed a photo album that my mother made for her parents. (Mom passed in 2000.) So I have all of those images and memories of Ocracoke and Cape Hatteras and the gorgeous lighthouses, and I really hope that this hurricane spares that area that is so beautiful and yet so fragile.

A couple pictures (remember...it was 1985!)

My sister and I walking up to Ocracoke Lighthouse. Mom said, "It is one of the oldest on the east coast that is still in operation. And of Ocracoke Island, "...our favorite 14 mile long island. This is the bay where Blackbeard the Pirate took refuge. In June it was quiet and peaceful." There are places where the island is mere feet wide.

Mom's favorite lighthouse.
Why I'm a bit sentimental about it, and why hurricanes moving toward that area bring me to tears.

Her caption to this photo is: "The lighthouse at Cape Hatteras. How many more hurricanes will it live through?"

They have already moved it back a few hundred yards because it was feet away from the ocean. I hope they moved it enough.

Aww, I was just in Morehead City & Havelock a month ago - daily driving to Emerald Isle/Atlantic Beach from New Bern.

You are right - those lighthouses are beautiful. I've been to Hatteras; this year we went to Cape Lookout.

I hope they are wrong about this hurricane. I'm so tired of destruction...

I wonder how far in storms are going to hit. I remember when Katrina hit we got some really severe storms in Central Pa. Hopefully this isnt as bad.

I hope everyone thats right on the coast is ok. Ive been thru a few hurricanes when we lived in NC growing up. The one I remember clearly though is Hugo because on our way home from a Girl Scout meeting we found a kitten stuck in a tree and named him Hugo since that was the hurricane causing all the storms.

Thanks for your concern and yes NJ may be hit especially since I'm not to far from the Jersey Shore, hoping for the best tho.

Oh I hope everyone comes through this ok. I also think of all the animals and those wild horses out on those islands near the Carolinas.

When I was a little kid, we had the "tail end" of a hurricane come through western New York. Trees were down. I guess it could happen again if it comes inland enough.

Go away Earl.....go east where you can do no harm!!!

Keep us posted as well as you can....we are all buds here and I will say some prayers for this storm to fizzle out.

Great, I am right on the coast of NC, in Jacksonville, right outside Camp Lejeune. Even if we don't get a direct hit, it always rains like crazy and floods. Fortunately my house was among some of the ones that got good flood drainage put in a few years ago. Or, we might leave for a few days since it is a category 4. I just got a 4 wheel drive suv, so if it gets too bad, we will throw the cats in the carriers and head inland to Kinston or Raleigh. DH just left to get gas for the generator and I will head out for groceries and cat food when he gets back. I have been talking to him about it for a week, and he swears he didn't know anything about it.
On the bright side, the local news is not reporting it to be as bad as the weather channel says it is, so hopefully they are right.
I am on the list to drive elderly and handicapped, so I may be working to get some of them to shelters until they pull us off the road. I am one of the only ones that will have animals in my cab, so I hope they will have a shelter that takes pets this time if the need arises. They will pull us off the road in time for us to evacuate if need be, or I can just leave and not work. I don't think I could do that though. Too many elderly people that have pets, particularly cats, and I can't just leave them to fend for themselves. I am going to try to round up some extra carriers over the next few days in case someone does not have one and the shelters won't allow them without them. Wish me luck if it gets bad here.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
I think we're far enough inland in NJ that it'd be just windy and rainy. The rivers around here flood like crazy though.

Rebecca... and everyone else in Earl's path... Be safe!

Yep, we are getting things ready. We are on the coast too. We do have a generator and hope to stay home. We live between two rivers. When the last hurricane came I could look out my upstairs window and see the water coming from all directions. Homes in my neighborhood that have never been flooded got flooded. Just down the road from me afterwards, clothes and furniture were stacked head high by the road. Thankfully, I live on land that has been passed in my family for more than a hundred years. It doesn't flood. Thanks for the prayers everyone.

In watching the weather this morning, they have upped our winds to 40/70 mph. All of that will be going on Thurs. night. (Usually have music practice with a little church group who are practicing bluegrass gospel). Hubby is getting out the generator today and making sure it works. It will run the tv, freezer, refrigerator, and wall switches. He'll have to get some extra gas for that. We will be securing things outside.
My cats will be moving into the garage where we have a large cage, big enough for litter pan, water, etc. If things were to change and we leave, they leave too of course. For now, I am just planning on stocking a few extra things to eat.

Earl has been downgraded to Cat 3. Hope the downgrading continues.

We're about 65 miles from the ocean, but I'm getting extra gas for the generator and preparing a few things today, just in case.

I am not sure what to think....I am in NY but the new projected path doesn't it show it coming near us. But I am VERY worried about my sister and her family. She is on her first family vacation (she has a baby who will be two in Nov) and was so excited and looking forward to spending the weekend on the beach in N. Carolina...they even rented a beach front condo...I am not sure if she changed her plans or not but she is supposed to be driving down today I just hope that if she did decide to go..she gets there BEFORE The storm hits.

We have spent the morning securing things in the yard and moving the plants off the front of the house. I have a screen porch on the back. Later I will have to take the cushions off that furniture and secured things out there. For now, Mattie and Muffin are asleep on the sofa out there. I am cooking too. Have to plan ahead in case of power outage. Our generator will run the fridge, but not the stove. We are having Teriyaki pork loin, mashed potatoes, wheat bread, marinated vegetable salad, and for dessert pear pie and vanilla ice cream. We will eat good while Earl does whatever it does.
