I recently acquired two kittens a male and female. They were born April 15th so they are 4-1/2 months old now. When I took them to the vet they scheduled them to be spayed/neutered the end of October. The female appears to be in heat. I called the vet to move the date up but they won't operate on the female until she's 6 months old and not while she's in heat. So Wednesday the male is going in to be neutered. Just in case he's nailed her, is he mature enough to get her pregnant? I sure hope not. I'm angry the vet wouldn't let me get her taken care of sooner.

I found the text in this book spot on, but the illustrations aren't helpful at all. Good over all book

If you have a shelter/low cost clinic call them they tend to take them in earlier to be fixed(and more experience may mean a easier recovery as they have tons experience on the tiny ones
-I just had done and they were 9 and 10 1/2 weeks.

A possibility, but not as likely as it would be if it was a more mature kitten or adult cat.
Did you notice him showing much interest in her? It's possible that he didn't have a clue what was going on - I really hope that's the case.
And yes, I think the 6month waiting period becomes rather irresponsible of vets. A lot of accidental litters from people who really do intend to spay their kittens could be prevented, as well as a lot of stress.
Some low cost spay and neuter clinics will do pediatric spays as early as 8 weeks. You may try tracking one down and see if the vet(s) affiliated with it would be willing to spay her in their regular clinic.

I'm still steaming the vet wouldn't listen to me. Hopefully I can get this resolved before any accidental pregnancy occurs ... especially since they're siblings!

Could you keep them seperated until you can get them fixed?? If so, that is one way to try to prevent a pregnancy from happening.

Most vets will do them a lot earlier now. I would call around and find out if there is a vet in your area that believes in early spay.

I do think you should find a vet who will do it sooner. I have had females go into heat at 4 months and it's a pain. If you have to wait 2 more months with a cat in heat you might go crazy, LOL. All that being said, probably the male didn't breed her. At 4 months males usually aren't fertile, and they don't know what to do anyway. But you never know. So definitely keep them separated until she's spayed (males can impregnate females for a while after being neutered, on the off chance he's already fertile), and call around to find a vet that will spay her soon.

not only are there vets who will do an earlier spay, there are also vets that will spay a cat in heat. i don't recommend it, since there's a greater chance of blood loss [at least, that's what the vet said], but 2 of mine were spayed in heat because they caught me by surprise [early 1st heats, both of them].

Yes he is and its very dangerous at her age to be pregnant - she may not survive.
I would find another vet now and ask for an emergency spay because of the situation. Keep calling till you find one - don't put her at risk because of your vet's refusal to do an emergency spay. Kittens as young as 3-4 months old can be spayed and shelters do them at 8 weeks old.
Back in the 80's a friend that bred purebred Siamese let her 4-5 month old little male kitten run with some adult females. One or two were in heat..........guess who the father of that litter was???? Yep - the "innocent" baby who everyone thought didn't know what he was doing!

Keep in mind, even if you get the male done he is still fertile for up to 2 months so cannot be around the female until she is fixed.
