Mother cat acting oddly.

Not sure if I put this is the correct board; if not, I'm sorry!

Anyway, on August 10th my sister's cat of one year gave birth to three kittens. Things have been relatively fine, except today my sister told me how she was in the living room and heard the mother cat freaking out. She went to investigate and found the runt of the litter crawling around on the floor outside their cage, which has some cardboard around the sides so they can't climb out.

She put the runt back in and watched. Apparently the mom cat would pick one up and them place them outside the cage, then proceed to freak out and meow like crazy.

Yesterday my sister told me how Katie (mom's name) would wave her paw around inside the cage and call to them from outside the cage, trying to prompt them out I guess.

Is this normal or what?

There could be something wrong with the runt, but the latter behavior suggests that she wants the kittens somewhere else. She's trying to get them to move.

Can she and the kittens be moved to a quiet bedroom or a big closet? Most cats like to be hidden away with their kittens.

I would think that, but she just happened to pick the runt up first, she does it to the others as well from what I was told.

They live in a trailer, and the cage (pretty dang large) is in their bedroom in the back of the trailer. They have two dogs that go in there, but she does have a gate that she uses to put up in the doorway.

Then they need to make sure that room is quiet and comfortable. If it's fairly bright in there, maybe cover the windows or at least cover part of the cage to make the mother cat feel more secure. It definitely sounds like she doesn't prefer the spot they put her in.

No more dogs or other animals in the room till the kittens are over 8weeks old. They may be good dogs, but they're bigger and mother cat is just being protective.
