The vet told me to give my kitten 1/4 of a can of food in the morning, then give 1/4 cup of dry food for in between breakfest and supper, then an other 1/4 of canned food for supper. problem is, she did not finnish her 1/4 of canned food today at 9am. it is now 11am and she is juste not finnishing her other half of the portion. What do I do?? The vet told me she would eat it all.

Please help

I do not know how old your kitten is, but when they're young you simply have to just experiment a little. For feedings put about a tablespoon down at a time and if she finish it, put down another, repeat. Kittens should be allowed to eat as much as they can. Same with the dry, she'll probably eat a little more than 1/4c.

Leftovers can go back in the fridge to be reheated and fed later. Ideally you should pick it up pretty quickly because it is meat. Since that's been out a couple hours, just go ahead and throw that bit away.

First Congrats on your recently adopted kitten! I would love to see pictures.

Every cat/kitten can be different on works best for them. You will get to know what works over time with trial and error. As long as she is eating something and acting normal she should be ok. Since it seems you just got her recently if it has only been a few days she will definitely need time to adjust to her new surroundings. Maybe once she has adjusted better you will see her eating habits more clearly.

Keep us posted.

Kittens can be trying when it comes to getting them to eat. I had to hand feed my kitten to get him to eat. Which means I had to dip my hand in the mush and let him eat off my hands. He didn't eat wet or dry. So I had to choose various brands and see which one he would go for. Eventually, I found foods that he likes. Just be patient. Maybe try adding a little bit of warm water or chicken broth.

Alrighty so my kitten is two months old. I've had her for about a week and a half and she seems very happy and comfortable. However, she still isn't eating what the vet told me to feed her. Since I got her I've been encouraging her to eat by from time to time tapping on her bowl when she stops eating and starts walking away. This makes her come back and take more bites. I'm feeling a little bit better about her situation by reading your comments and having my boyfriend tell me over and over ''When she's hungry she'll eat. It's a cat it's her instinc!''. However I still have that little worry that my Minette might develop health problems in the long run.

Thats my update hehe

are you feeding a Kitten food ? what is available to you?

at 8 weeks most kitten s are just moveing off mom and mush to real solids... Your kitten may not like the food you choose or may still need it moistened slightly

I had the same problem with Pandora, it turns out she just hated the food. I changed the food and now she scarfs it down.

I was thinking the same thing - the kitten doesn't like the food. And no - she won't eat or eat much if she doesn't like it. Cats are very stubborn that way... and yes.. .it can post health problems.

I suggested that to my vet, however she said it is the food she is supposed to eat. It is moist chicken medical kitten food. When she decides to eat it she will eat half of de 1/4 canned portion I give her (she eats all of her portion of solid food). She has another check up on the 18th of september. Should I call the vet before the 18th??

There are lots of good kitten foods out there. It doesn't do her much good if she doesn't and won't eat it.

Can I ask what it is that the vet told you to use?

My guess is that it is Hills Science Diet? Kitten Formula?

I would find a better food, one that she actually likes.

8 weeks old is young, she may benifit from a little KMR (Kitten Milk Replacment) every day. I have mixed a few scoops of KMR powder with wet food before for young kittens. Or you could give it to her like the can says but not as her sole diet, just as a treat & extra calories/vitamins.

Congrats on you new kitten!

the vet made me buy a 24 pack of canned Royal Canin Medical Gastro Vet Exclusive feline food. Is it true that if i mix it with chicken broth she'll be prone to eat it?

Why this? Did the kitten present with gastrointestinal issues? Can you take the unopened cans back to the vet for a refund? I mean - if the kitten is not eating it, it does her no good. I suppose you can put a little chicken broth in it.

I read the ingredient list. I am not impressed. So this still begs the question of WHY. Was the kitten sick, underweight, having GI issues? RC makes a good food for sick, underweight animals called Recovery. Or any good quality kitten food would do the trick. What do you have available to you in terms of stores/retail that sells pet food?

For those interested, here is the list:
Canned -

Water Sufficient for Processing, Chicken, Chicken By-Products, Brewer’s Rice, Rice Gluten, Rice Flour, Fish Oil, Powdered Cellulose, Dried Beet Pulp, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Cassia Gum, Guar Gum, Vegetable Oil, Carrageenan, Potassium Chloride, Taurine, Vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate [Source of Vitamin C], DL-Alpha-Tocopherol Acetate [Source of Vitamin E], Thiamine Mononitrate [Vitamin B1], Niacin Supplement, Biotin, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride [Vitamin B6], Riboflavin Supplement [Vitamin B2], Vitamin B12 Supplement, Folic Acid and Vitamin D3 Supplement), Fructo-Oligosaccharides, Calcium Carbonate, Natural Flavour, Choline Chloride, Mannan-Oligosaccharides, Sodium Silico Aluminate (Zeolite), Trace Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Oxide, Iron Sulphate, Copper Sulphate, Manganous Oxide, Sodium Selenite and Calcium Iodate) and Marigold Extract (Source of Lutein).

Canned: 180 kcal/can

Edited to add: Many of the well-versed people on here will tell you that vets don't get much nutritional training and much of what they DO get comes from the pet food companies. They also make money on the Rx prescriptions. I would get a good cross-section of high quality kitten or all-life-stages wet and try them with Minette and see if she will eat any of it. You can thin it out with KMR or broth if she has trouble with the more solid food. If you want recommendations, lots of people on here would be glad to give them to you.

Ok, I'm with Sharky - if the vet can't give me a really good reason why this is the one and only prescription food my cat can eat, I'd certainly try another line of food - there are almost always other prescription lines. I'm not saying ignore the vet - unless this vet doesn't respond to the idea that the cat simply is not eating - any good vet will suggest another food, and, geez, mine started me out with just a few cans and a small bag of prescription food. And, at least mine does take back unopened canned food - I had to return a flavor my guy couldn't tolerate.

My own cat is on Hills CD for urinary health, and likes it - but if he didn't, there are others I could try, with the vet's blessing.

I asked the vet if she was underweight and she's the ideal weight! But when I got her she was constipated for 6 days since I got her. However she's regular now she does everything like shes supposed to. She eats about 1 cup of solid food a day. She seems fine without the moist food so I wouldnt see the harm in switching to another one. I'm just worried i'm stuck with 24 cans of cat food.
