Klepto Kitty

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone here has ever dealt with a kitty who likes to steal weird things. Lately my tortie has been making off with strange objects. Hair ties (not that weird), eye glasses, phone charger, eye drops and her own nail clippers to name a few. She always seems to do it when no one is watching, and we catch her later on while shes playing with them. As cute as it is, I don't want to encourage this behavior. I really did not like seeing her with the eye drops or phone charger.

A little info about her. She's just over a year, spayed and there have been no major changes in our lives. We also have a 2 year old siamese mix, who is also spayed and they get along wonderfully. She just loves wand toys but has little interest in toys that she could bat around. I thought maybe she might be wanting more toys she could carry around and hide, so I got her some more mice and jingle ball type toys, but she still wants to take other things.

So does anyone else have experience with kitties who like to steal? Is something bothering her or is this just a quirk?

Thanks for your time!

I'm having issues with my computer and so I hope this goes through...

I have a klepto kitty. And, coincidentally, she is also a tortie. And, while she has different preferences on what she likes to steal, she behaves very similarly to your kitty. My Emory loves to steal anything shiny. I swear she must have been a ferret in a past life ! It doesn't matter what it is -- if it shines, she needs to have it. I'm always finding things hidden away in odd places. And, not only is she a klepto, but she's a hoarder as well! So, right off the bat, I would say not to overanalyze your kitty's behavior. But, on the other hand, I would take note and see if you can't figure out a way to stop or decrease the behavior. And, at the very least, you should ensure that she can't get to anything that could be potentially harmful (ie. the eye drops).

Just recently, my Emory started stealing my jewelry and shiny hair ties. She'd go out of her way to open the jewelry box or get into the drawer where I keep my hair bands. She's also done this, but the behavior increased dramatically and suddenly she was taking anything and everything. Thankfully, out situation was one that could be figured out quickly. I had experienced something terrible and had withdrawn. My cat simply missed my playing with her on schedule. So, I quickly went back to our routine and the "robberies" have cut down exponentially. She'll always steal things and ferret them away, but knowing my cat helped me realize that there was something more going on than just a simple affection for shiny things. That's not to say that your cat has an issue -- rather, it's just about trying to see things through their eyes. It may be as simple as she likes being a klepto , but, it doesn't hurt to make sure there's nothing else going on.

Good luck and keep us updated (and, at the very least, make sure to put away anything that could potentially be harmful to your little tortie girl).

It just seems a little strange to me because this has been going on for about a month maybe. We've had her since late March. It's nice to hear that this might just be another of her zanie quirks and not some emotional upheaval.

After she got a hold of the eye drops, we made sure to go through our house and put away anything she could get her paws on that could make her sick if she ate any of it. As well as some other things we just don't want her to lose.

She's my first tortie and I had no idea before I got her that they have such funny personalities. We absolutely adore her and she has been such a joy for us and our siamese. Even if she is a cat burglar hehe.

We also give her lots of play time with her wand toys when we get home from work in the evening. She's a constant ball of energy and it really helps her burn some of that off. Will keep you updated if I find anything that might stop her stealing a bit. Or if I find a toy she likes to "steal".

HAHA!! I thought Tortie's seemed to have that trait! YES! Chickster stills EVERYTHING. First she started with my hairties and put them in her water glasses, or just took them never to be seen again. Then she started snatching the bottle tops to my soda bottles (There were 20 under one of our chairs in our livingroom) now she likes to walk off with anything she can find, and she seems to want to "Build" things and put things together. I've never seen a cat really think about something before, and if she pulls apart her toy (Stick with a piece of felt tied to the end, an actual stick from a tree) she will sit there and try to put it back together for at least thirty minutes. She really tries to do what alot of what we do and watches us very intently. She likes to watch us make coffee and tea.

This is just her, she's between 2 and 3 now I think and she still does it. She'll walk off with paper towels, she pick up her own toys and try to clean up, and she'll drag her felt stick over to me when she wants to play. When she's done playing she will take it from me and drag it to the other side of the room.

I don't think it's odd, just make sure she's not eating them (Chickster doesn't eat mine, she usually just puts them in water) and make sure there is nothing she can get to (Floss, thread, anything she can swallow) I always make sure her toys are bigger than her mouth and have no removable parts (Like googly eyes or anything)

Chickster is VERY curious so I have to watch her and if I hear weird noises it's a sign she's got something. She loves killing bugs, which is great, but earlier my Mom was mixing grout and walked away for two seconds, I was running my mouth and there goes Chickster sticking her face into the bucket of mixed grout and I freaked out thinking she had eaten some. All is OK though, but I was freaked.

She also loves string (What cat doesn't) but she will get it caught in her mouth and end up trying to swallow it so that is no longer allowed for play toys, (Only did is supervised anyway) .. only thick felt on a stick and then her bottle tops. She loves licking plastic bags, too.

Really be careful about what she can gain access to. I had to put up everything, especially things like a jigsaw puzzle because she was stealing pieces and chewing on them. Cellophane from packs of tea or anything, foil wrappers from things, and right now she is playing with a plastic container that my fake nails came in.

I don't worry about Chickster's stealing my hair ties or bottle tops as I know she doesn't swallow them, but I stay concerned about her around electrical wiring because she went through a phase of trying to chew them when she was itty bitty.

I think Tortie's are amazing (All cats are) but this one here .. she's just right dern special, even if a bit temperamental.

Hehe very cute to hear about other torties doing this.

And I love the bottle cap thing! Maybe I can get her interested in bottle caps, rather then just taking whatever catches her eye at the moment.

She never really chews on the items she takes, other then just carrying them off to the laundry room. She likes to bring them in there, and bat them around the tile floor. If the laundry room door is closed, she stashes them in a bedroom with a few of her toys.

My Tortie growing up wasn't much of a klepto but she had a love hate relationship with everyone she came in contact with. She wanted you to pet her but only certain areas and if you dare to touch her anywhere that wasn't pre-approved you might as well forget it! Her name was Alex and we found her in the crawl space under my parents house when I was in High School. She was just a kitten. I kept hearing meowing and my parents thought I was nuts. Finally I opened up a door to the crawl space and there she was, a fluffy little Tortie! So I guess that could be considered breaking and entering!

Hehe...My cats steal and hoard hair ties as well! And just today, L.S. brought two wheels over to us! I'm not sure what they even go to! (Probably a set of plastic drawers, but who knows! Lol!) Our house is a wreck, because we just moved, so I don't even know where he got them!
