Sadness warning

I wasn't exactly sure where to post this thread, so I apologize to the mods if this is the wrong place. I have seen this story on the local news and wanted to share it with TCS members, though it is upsetting. What kind of virus do you think could have caused this? Or do you think it was a virus at all? This is a very shocking and sad story. This is the shelter where I adopted Speck a little over three years ago.

There were several articles, but I could only copy and paste the link for this one. However, it seems odd to me that there is such a contagious illness that jumps species among dogs and cats and they (the vets) can't identify it. I admit I don't know a great deal on animal health issues with the exception of what I've learned from my own pets. Anyway, this story is especially scary to me because this is the cleanest, nicest shelter I've ever seen. If this could happen there, I can't imagine what could happen in our county's shelter.
