Itchy Kitten

Tumbles has been scratching a lot recently. He has NO fleas as we have no infestation, see no flea dirt, and we've been applying Revolution. The last application was 8/15. Also, last month when we were at the vet (7/30), he was flea free. He's currently eating EVO cat/kitten 4x day and a combination of TOTW & Royal Canin Babycat 34 dry as wanted.

He mainly scratches on his shoulder/back of the neck area. He also bites at himself in various places. It's not excessive and he's not scratching himself raw or licking off his hair. I'm wondering what could be causing it. Is it possibly dry skin? Is it a normal kitten thing? We will be talking to the vet about this when he goes for his next booster shot/check up next Wednesday.

Sometimes the itchiness from flea bites can last a couple weeks, but it seems like your kitten should be good there.

It sounds like one of two things: dry skin like you've considered or a possible allergy. The allergen/irritant doesn't necessarily need to be from the food, either, it could be any household product you use or even the litter itself (if you're using a scented clay).
See what the vet says Wednesday, maybe they'll be able to figure it out.

Thanks! I've already taken him off the Royal Canin to see if it's grain related. We use World's Best Cat Litter, so I don't think it's that. It might be the detergent we use for the towels, since he loves to lay on the old towels we have down on the floor for them. Hmmm.... Will also talk to the vet for sure on Wed.

What detergent do you use and do you use a fabric softener/drier sheet? The latter would be a bigger problem because it leaves a coating on the fabric. (which actually attracts dirt to fabrics more in the long run)

We use some kind of Purex. We used to use the Purex "free" but DH recently bought some different kind of Purex. We normally don't use dryer sheets, just use vinegar in the wash and tennis balls in the dryer.

Sure, blame the husband. All you can do is work on narrowing it down. Maybe you'll eventually find the problem. If fish isn't an issue, you could try some fish oil to see if it is just dry skin.

The husband does all the shopping, so it *is* his fault!

We were going to try fish oil, but we're afraid it'll make soft poops. We've just gotten them firmed up and don't want to jeopardize that.

I've taken him off the Royal Canin kitten food (dry) and he's now getting TOTW dry along with his feedings of wet food (EVO). It's only been 2 days, and I'm not seeing any drastic changes in scratching, so we'll keep working on it and talk to the vet on Wednesday.
